Ariana Grande continues to catch the heat for her controversial remark about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. After the singer’s unusual confession of her affection towards serial killers, the loved ones of one of Dahmer’s victims are speaking out. Dahmer was one of America’s most brutal serial killers, murdering and dismembering 17 boys between 1978 and 1991.
The family of Tony Hughes, one of Dahmer’s 1991 victims, spoke up against Grande’s comment in an interview. Hughes’ mom, Shirley, expressed her disappointment, saying the singer’s remark made her emotional. The heartbroken matriarch admitted being disturbed when Grande laughed while speaking about the late serial killer.
“To me, it seems like she’s sick in her mind. It’s not fancy or funny to say you would have wanted to do dinner with him. It’s also not something you should say to young people, which she says she did.”
Shirley Hughes
Shirley told TMZ she was particularly hurt that Grande didn’t take any time to show empathy for the victims. As for Hughes’ sister, Barbara, she believes the singer gave Dahmer a platform and owes an apology to her fans.
Hughes’ family isn’t the only one publicly bashing Grande. Recall that the Side to Side singer spoke about Dahmer on the Podcrushed podcast. “I was infatuated with serial killers when I was younger,” the 30-year-old gushed. She then recalled an incident involving a younger fan who asked her about her dream dinner date.
Years ago, before the Dahmer series, I was in a Q&A with young fans. Someone said, ‘If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would it be?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, honey, you’re so cute. Um, Mom and Dad, is it okay if I give the real answer? And I was like, ‘Jeffrey Dahmer’s pretty fascinating. I think I would have loved to have met him.”

Grande’s words infuriated fans, who slammed her on social media for romanticizing serial killers. “I understand the intrigue of true crime, but this thought probably should have been kept secret,” wrote one fan, while another lamented, “Wtf. No way. Stop romanticizing serial killers, especially in 2024. It’s not cute, Ariana.”
