Many people think that the best part about proposals is the element of surprise. To some people, however, it is okay to know beforehand. An Arkansas woman divided the internet after she posted a video on TikTok of her telling her best friend she was getting proposed to. Some people thought it was cute that she wanted her friend to look great and be ready for such an important moment. Others got mad at the thought of the proposal not being a surprise anymore because the Arkansas woman told her friend. This made her come out with a response to all the criticism.
In the video, the Arkansas woman sits inside a car with her friend, Gabby. She tells her that she has to change, and immediately, Gabby is in shock. It seemed like she already knew what was happening. Things were confirmed when the Arkansas woman named Ivy told her friend that she had to change into her engagement dress. The rest of the video shows Gabby in disbelief while laughing. Her eyes even got teary. Ivy asks her, “Did we get you?” to which Gabby responds by saying, “I had no idea.”
People Reacting to the Arkansas Woman’s Video
Some people were against how the Arkansas woman told her friend about the proposal beforehand. One person asked, “why did u tell…. Why didn’t he see her surprise.” Ivy responded to this by saying:
“She [Gabby] picked out a certain dress to get engaged in, so she would know right away anyways!! She wanted it this way”
Another person went a step further as they wrote, “imagine planning the perfect proposal just for her best friend to ruin the surprise before hand [sic]. I’d have to call the whole thing off cause clearly bestie wants to take the fiance’s place.” To which one replied by saying, “genuinely what made you come to this conclusion.” Another comment said, “I would be so mad.”
Despite the backlash, some people found that it was okay that the Arkansas woman told her friend what was happening. One woman wrote, “I’m sorry I would rather look hot for my proposal than not know.” Another woman defended Ivy as well by saying:
“We need to normalize the bestie giving a heads up right before. It’s so special that she got to tell you first and that you had a minute to freak out and wear what you want”
One person then pointed the obvious which was later backed by Ivy’s response video. That person wrote, “You guys… the finance [sic] was obviously aware of this plan and aware of her knowing. Clearly she was still surprised. If the couple is cool why are you pressed.”
Arkansas Woman Responds to Hate Comments
All the hate comments and criticism made Ivy post another video responding to all the comments. She explains that Gabby has previously told her what she wants her proposal to be like including how she wanted it to happen under a willow tree. Ivy then adds that Gabby has anxiety as well which makes her doesn’t like surprises. Honestly, as a person with anxiety, I would also prefer to know beforehand instead of being surprised without preparing.
The Arkansas woman then made it clear that the proposal was still a surprise but “on her [Gabby’s] own terms.” She then adds that everything went the way Gabby wanted it to be and that this was her “dream.” Ivy also clarified that while Gabby knew about the proposal, she didn’t know all the details.
One person then asked in the comments if the fiancé knew that Ivy was going to tell Gabby beforehand. Ivy wrote in response “YES. It’s not my proposal but I got asked to help surprise her. He knew what was happening.” Honestly, at the end of the day, if the couple themselves are happy then that’s good enough. No one involved was harmed by the Arkansas woman “ruining” the surprise as some said. It was still a good day and that is what matters.
