Ubisoft has confirmed that when you are playing Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the game will adapt to your character selection, and the game’s director thinks you won’t miss out on much if you just stick to one of the two protagonists in the game.
The decision won’t have to be made at the beginning of the game like in past experiences in the franchise, instead, you can switch between two at different points while playing the game. Jonathan Dumont said in an interview that if you want to stick with just one, you won’t miss out on much.
If you haven’t been following Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it will let you choose from either Yaoe, who is a stealthy ninja, akin to how assassins have been in the past games, and Yasuke, a massive samurai who depends a lot more on his strength than his ability to quietly move in the dark.
The two characters will have their own introductions as well as their own questlines, so the playthrough of one character will differ from the other, as they are distinct. But the core of the game itself won’t change, and it will “adapt.”
After reiterating that it isn’t too important, Dumont went on to say that there will be some choices in the game that depends on which character you’re playing, but even then, he thinks it won’t make a major difference.
He added that he likes to switch characters every few hours when playing Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but it is not necessary and they won’t be imposed on players. But this does not mean you will be able to play the game from start to finish with just one character. He said you can play “quite a bit of the game” with just one character, likely meaning that switching to the other will be unavoidable at some point.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows was planned for release in November of last year, and was then pushed into February of this year, only to be delayed once against to March 20. Ubisoft made these delays due to competition from games like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds, while also using the extra time to incorporate fan feedback and making sure that the mistakes made with Star Wars Outlaws aren’t repeated again.
