Aubrey Plaza has broken her silence on her husband Jeff Baena’s tragic passing. Days after the director was confirmed to have taken his life, the heartbroken actress released a tear-jerking message acknowledging her immeasurable loss.
A rep for Plaza shared her first public comment about her husband’s death. “This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time,” the statement read. TMZ broke the news of Baena’s demise on Friday after authorities responded to a home in the Los Angeles area for a death investigation. Per reports, Beana’s assistant was the one who found his body. Aubrey Plaza wasn’t on the property at the time of the death. The beloved director was confirmed dead, with law enforcement confirming he committed suicide. He was only 47 years old. In an update later that day, the LA County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed Baena died by hanging. No further details were shared about if he left behind a suicide note.
Plaza’s statement comes after she skipped out on the 2025 Golden Globes Award ceremony. The White Lotus actress was due to present at the award show before the unfortunate tragedy occurred.
Aubrey Plaza & Jeff Baena Enjoyed A Low-key Marriage
Per Daily Mail, the lovebirds were last seen in public together last summer while taking a stroll in Griffith Park, Los Angeles. Despite being married for four years and together for 14 years, Plaza and Baena were notoriously private about their relationship. Their love story dates back to 2011, when they began dating.
It is unsure how they met, but Baena, who graduated with a film degree from New York University, often collaborated with his wife. The duo worked together on several projects, including Life After Beth, Joshy, The Little Hours, and the 2022 comedy film Spin Me Round. In a 2019 interview, the Plaza credited working in the same field for helping their romance. “I think that when you’re with someone that is in your field, they understand what you’re dealing with on a deeper level,” she gushed at the time.
However, it wasn’t until May 2021 that the low-key couple made headlines again. The Parks and Recreation star referred to Baena as her “husband” in an Instagram post, confirming that they tied the knot. She later shared details about their private nuptials, saying they had an intimate backyard wedding during the Covid-19 pandemic. “We got a little bored one night. So we got married, and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s real, look it up,” Plaza recalled.
Jeff Baena is survived by his wife, his mom, Barbra Stern, brother Brad Baena, and step-siblings. May his soul RIP.
