Backlash As New York City Man Praises Mayor Mamdani for Putting Trash Bins on Streets, Says ‘I Love Socialism. I Love Sharia Law’

Trash cans radicalized this man

A New York man’s love letter to a city trash bin has turned into one of those clips the Internet cannot decide whether to laugh at or argue about, and so far it managed to do both at once.

A guy pointing excitedly at street furniture is not usually main character material, but thirty seconds of enthusiastic monologue changed that quickly. The video has circulated on X since it was posted, drawing commentary from people who found it funny, people who found it confusing, and people who found it something else entirely.

“I love socialism” because New York City bought some trash cans. 😂

Brother, those bins are being paid for with tax revenue generated by millions of people working, running businesses, buying things and making money in one of the biggest capitalist economies on Earth. Government… pic.twitter.com/5XzLMql2NF

The man in the clip is filmed on a New York sidewalk, gesturing at one of the city’s new large public trash and recycling bins while directly crediting Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

“Look at this. Mamdani? Mamdani? Yes! Look at this. Look at this anti-rat, anti-medieval trash in the streets. I love it. The whole thing. This is the future for us, okay? I love socialism. I love Sharia law. Mamdani, you the best. Thank you,” he says in the video.

The bins themselves are real and part of an actual city initiative. New York’s “Empire Bins” containerization program began under former Mayor Eric Adams and has been significantly expanded under Mamdani, who was sworn in as mayor on January 1.

The stationary, on-street containers are designed to replace loose trash bags piled on sidewalks, with officials citing rat reduction and cleaner streets as the primary goals. The rollout has already reached eight of the city’s 59 community districts, with a citywide target set for 2031.

Internet Reacts to New York Trash Bin Video

The clip was shared on X by the account @ClownWorld.

Commenters mostly focused on the economics of the moment rather than the bins themselves. “lol calling capitalism socialism every time a city buys a trash can is a whole personality at this point,” one commenter wrote, while another pointed out a detail in the frame itself: “Isn’t it interesting his pointing hand holds a coffee cup from a store where he contributed to capitalism?”

A third brought up an unrelated comparison, joking, “I thought those were California tiny homes for the homeless that cost 300k a pop.”

Other replies leaned more critical of the sentiment behind the praise. “‘This is the future’ Just a street lined with trash cans because you guys live like filthy *expletive*,” one commenter wrote. Another reply went further, predicting the bins would eventually create their own set of problems, saying, “Just wait until the combined aromas of uneaten vegetable and protein waste, baking in hot plastic ovens for days, gently wafts over the neighborhood, filling noses and living rooms with the putrid smells of the countries that the invaders call home.”

And to clear up any confusion: the trash bins are, in fact, just trash bins. No Sharia law was installed alongside the Empire Bins, no caliphate was declared over New York, and the only thing being enforced curbside is a rat-reduction policy.
