Backlash Erupts Over Virginia Foxx’s Letter to Fourth Grader About Electric Cars in North Carolina: ‘Vile Through and Through’

Virginia Foxx, a North Carolina congresswoman, is facing heavy online backlash after her response to a 10-year-old student’s school assignment went viral on social media. Critics accused Foxx of sending an unnecessarily harsh and highly political letter to a fourth grader who had written to her about electric cars and climate policy. The controversy has sparked debate online about how elected officials should respond to children participating in school projects and civic discussions.

The story gained major attention on Reddit after screenshots of Virginia Foxx’s response began circulating online in the North Carolina subreddit. Posts discussing the letter received several hundred upvotes and more than 100 comments, with many users criticizing the tone of the congresswoman’s response and arguing it was inappropriate for a child.

According to posts shared online, the student had written a persuasive essay for a school assignment supporting electric vehicles and suggesting the federal government consider tax rebates for electric car purchases. The child reportedly mailed the assignment directly to Foxx using a school envelope marked with “4th Grade” in the return address, making it clear the letter came from a young student.

In her response, Virginia Foxx thanked the student for reaching out but went on to criticize government subsidies for electric vehicles and broader climate-related policies. The letter included arguments about taxes, government spending, constitutional limits on federal authority, and concerns about the national debt.

Foxx’s response also included links to several opinion articles criticizing climate initiatives and renewable energy policies. One of the most controversial parts of the letter came when she suggested the North Carolina student ask his teacher to explain “propaganda” and claimed some teachers focus more on “indoctrinating” students than helping them learn critical thinking skills.

North Carolina Reddit Users Slam Foxx

That section of the response quickly became one of the most criticized points online, with many users arguing the language was far too aggressive for a fourth grader completing a classroom assignment. “Virginia Foxx is, and has always been, vile through and through,” one Reddit user wrote.

Others accused the North Carolina congresswoman of hypocrisy, arguing some government spending supported by Republicans contradicted the message she gave the student about fiscal responsibility and taxpayer money.

“Yes, yes. We need to practice fiscal responsibility. Then why are they trying to pass $1 billion for a ballroom or $25 billion for the Iran war? Seems that money would be better spent encouraging Americans to buy vehicles that are less dependent on oil and gas. But who needs logic,” another Reddit user commented.

Some commenters also brought up unrelated criticism involving Foxx’s past actions during Hurricane Helene flooding in North Carolina. One Reddit user accused the congresswoman of prioritizing her own evacuation while nearby residents allegedly remained stranded without power or supplies for days. The commenter argued the alleged incident reflected a broader pattern of self-serving behavior, though the claims have not been independently verified.

Supporters of Virginia Foxx defended the response, saying she simply explained her political beliefs honestly and did not talk down to the student. Others argued children should be exposed to different political viewpoints, even if those opinions are unpopular online.
