Is it worth doing?

This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information.

Baldur’s Gate 3 allows players to customize their characters outside the usual appearance options. If you didn’t know, this game takes many rules from the fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons and adapts them to the game. For those unfamiliar, this means several classes and subclasses appear in this title to provide players with an extra layer of depth when playing. One of the latest classes to launch in early access was the Paladin. This righteous crusader is a fantastic support and damage dealer who can become an Oathbreaker in Baldur’s Gate 3, yet you must break your Paladin Oath. We’ll tell you how right here if you want to do it.

What Happens When You Break an Oath as a Paladin

This might sound bad and even punishing when you think about it. Paladins in Baldur’s Gate 3 follow an Oath that will have consequences if they manage to break it. While this sounds negative, it isn’t too bad. While other games might punish you for being evil, breaking a Paladin Oath in Baldur’s Gate 3 will unlock the Oathbreaker subclass. This is the only way since it isn’t available during the character creation screen.

Becoming an Oathbreaker in Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t bad if you want to play as an “evil” Paladin. You’ll get new spells that align more with the necromancy arts and other skills that will turn you from a righteous crusader to a ruthless fighter wielder of the dark arts.

How To Break an Oath

No dialogues point to how you can break your Paladin Oath in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, when you pick an Oath, it’ll tell you what type of choices you need to make to keep it. Here are the ones you need to follow:

  • Oath of the Ancients:
    • Be kind and help others.
  • Oath of Devotion:
    • Obey the law and show clemency when necessary.
  • Oath of Vengeance:
    • Show no mercy to the evil and the wicked.

These might sound vague, but in the end, there are choices in the story that you need to follow to keep an Oath. If you are on the path of the Oath of Devotion, the easiest way to break it would be by stealing. For the Oath of the Ancients, you’ll have to kill others or deny helping them, and so on.

Is Becoming An Oathbreaker Worth It?

In terms of roleplay, it’s up to you. The story is quite dark, and several options might conflict with your Oath, which is excellent. This will lead you to create your own story as a Paladin and make your journey fun. In terms of gameplay, the Oathbreaker isn’t as strong as the standard Paladin, mainly due to the loss of Divine Smite. But, as we always say, this game is your playground, and you shouldn’t be afraid to try it all.

And that’s how to break and become an Oathbreaker in Baldur’s Gate 3. You have the last word on it, and we recommend you try it once. If you don’t like it, you can recover your Oath by talking to the Oathbreaker Paladin in your camp.
