The owners of the Baldur’s Gate property, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, have talked about the future of the franchise, and after Larian’s concerning comments, have given the fans some hope. Larian Studios announced that it will not be working on a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel, nor do they plan on making any DLC expansions for the game.
Sven Vinke, the CEO of Larian Studios, announced that the team wants to move on from the Dungeons & Dragons universe and work on something new and different. This is both good news and bad news, depending on which side of the fence you are on.
But this doesn’t necessarily mean this is the end of the Baldur’s Gate series, which would not make business sense considering the popularity and acclaim of the most recent entry, Baldur’s Gate 3. In a recent interview, Hasbro’s Senior vice president, Eugene Evans, talked about how the IP will live on even after Larian Studios.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Sequel Might Be in the Cards Without Larian Studios
Evans said that they are in talks with a lot of partners who are interested in carrying the torch and making the next Baldur’s Gate title, and what it could become. But instead of taking 25 years, like from Baldur’s Gate 2 to 3, it will hopefully take much less time with the solid foundation of the third entry.
But before development can start, they have to find the right developers for the job that can represent the future of Baldur’s Gate. Being such a popular IP, this decision is being taken very seriously, and Hasbro will not rush into a decision anytime soon.
Larian Studios announced that the team has a bad track record with DLCs and expansions, which is why they skipped the notion entirely. And speaking about the next project, Vinke said that the team has a lot of new creative ideas that they would like to explore. We’ll have to wait to find out which direction they’re going to take, but luckily, the Baldur’s Gate franchise will live on.
