Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive game with many different areas to explore. For the completionist, navigating these giant maps can be an anxiety-inducing experience. Early in your adventures, you may stumble upon the entrance to the Mountain Pass location in the game. Players are always hesitant to enter because a warning tells you that the location is dangerous and you should tie up loose ends. However, the warning is slightly misleading as nothing in the area is a point of no return. This BG3 Mountain Pass walkthrough will discuss important quests and encounters in the zone.
Waypoint – Trielta Craigs
The first notable point of interest in the Mountain Pass is the Trielta Craigs Waypoint. This is discovered shortly after entering from the Wilderness location. You can’t miss it, as the waypoint is the only path forward once in the Mountain Pass.
BG3 Mountain Pass Quests – Lady Esther
If you head north from the Trielta Craighs Waypoint, you will eventually stumble upon the merchant Lady Esther. She has some notable items in her wares, including a chest piece that grants Dexterity.
However, she also offers the quest “Steal a Githyanki Egg.” You can choose to go along with her scheme or refuse. Notably, she will attack if you are hostile when refusing the task. This will end the quest prematurely, and Lady Esther will never reappear. Nevertheless, you can loot her wares for free from her corpse.
“Steal a Githyanki Egg” involves progressing through the Rosymorn Monastery in the north section of the Mountain Pass.
Traps on Road
As you head west up the steep road from Lady Esther, be aware of dangerous traps in the path. It is advised to have someone with high Perception so that you always know where these are located.
Death Shepherds Fight
You will encounter a dangerous group of enemies at the height of the western path. Two Death Shepherds and a host of Ghouls will block your way. This fight can be tricky if you are under-leveled or playing on higher difficulties.
These Death Shepherds are level six enemies with various resistances and immunities. Furthermore, they will revive any enemy that dies. For this reason, focusing on the Death Shepherds is advised first.
However, there is a fun trick to counter this if you just want to focus on the ghouls. After defeating one, pick up its body and throw it at the Death Shepherds. Keep your distance and try to find the higher ground to gain an advantage in the fight, and you should come out on top.
BG3 Mountain Pass Quests – Gale Companion Quest
Further west, past the Death Shepherd encounter, is a declining path into a chasm. Along this road, you will meet Elminster. We will avoid spoilers here, but know that he is part of Gale’s companion quest, “Wizard of Waterdeep.”
BG3 Mountain Pass Walkthrough – Shadow-Cursed Lands Entrance
Just past Elminster is the entrance to the Shadow-Cursed Lands. This area is what the warning when entering the Mountain Pass was actually talking about. This area is full of tough encounters and high-level enemies. You will progress the main narrative here and eventually get to a point of no return. For this reason, we advise avoiding this location until you have dealt with everything in the Mountain Pass and Wilderness areas of BG3.
Cable Car Dice Roll
If you head north from Lady Esther, you will stumble upon a Cable Car Wheel. Passing a dice roll will bring the car up and allow you to ride it down to the north area of the map. If you can’t seem to pass the roll for whatever reason, there is also a cliff you can climb down further to the west. Jump over the chasm, and you will also reach the northern area.
BG3 Mountain Pass Quests – Blue Jay’s Request
There is a bluejay in the western part of the northern area of the map. If you use the Speak with Animals spell, he will request you kill some eagles who stole his nest. The location of these aggressors is at the top of the Rosymorn Monastery. Notably, the nests also contain an item needed to progress the “Blood of Lathander” quest inside the monastery.
Upon telling the bluejay that you defeated the eagles, he will direct you to a treasure location in the eastern part of the map. This doesn’t contain much, but it’s a nice gesture at least.
Waypoint – Rosymorn Monastery
The final location is in the northern section of the Mountain Pass. You will stumble upon the Rosymorn Monastery Waypoint here. This location progresses Lae’zel’s companion quest and also contains hidden secrets to gain a legendary healing mace early in the game.
