In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Overgrown Ruins is one of the first places you will explore during the Investigate the Beach quest. After you crash land on the beach, you will find yourself near the Overgrown Ruins waypoint. There are several things you must do as you Explore the Ruins. You will find one of the several ways to access the Overgrown Ruins, get past a tricky locked door, avoid loads of traps, locate the Dank Crypt, and even find Withers, the Hireling Vendor NPC. Let’s discuss the Overgrown Ruins in Baldur’s Gate 3 below.
How To Access the Overgrown Ruins in Baldur’s Gate 3
There are quite a few different ways for you to get inside the Overgrown Ruins. Whether you choose the Ancient Door, the Chapel Entrance, the Cliff Path Hatch, or the Ornate Door, you will likely have to put in some work.
Ornate Door
The Ornate Door can be found North of the Chapel Entrance, just past the small campsite, complete with a Burlap Sack and Backpack. You’ll need to use a lockpick or Charisma to get through the door. You can break into the Baldur’s Gate 3 Overgrown Ruins using your lockpick or speak to Andorn, guarding the entrance from the other side.
You will be offered class-specific options for getting past Andorn. We could use Performance to convince him that we are Gimblebock or Deception to lure Andorn out to save Gimblebock, who you already would have defeated to get to the door. However, your choices may differ if you use another class or race.
Wooden Hatch
From where the statue stands in front of the Overgrown Ruins in Baldur’s Gate 3, head directly to the East. On a cliff path that leads up the side of the Ruins, you should see a locked Wooden Hatch on the ground. You must use a lockpick to open the hatch. However, if you can get into the locked Wooden Hatch, you will save yourself quite a bit of fighting and go directly into the Dank Crypt, where you can find Withers.
Chapel Entrance
Before you try to head into the Baldur’s Gate 3 Overgrown Ruins Chapel Entrance, be aware that the hole in the floor is a one-way entrance, and you can only climb back out once you find another exit. Just before you come to the Ornate Door entrance, you will notice a hole in the floor near the Ruins statue. Above the cracked flooring is a rock suspended by a rope. Shoot the rope, and the rock will fall, opening up a hole for you to enter into the Bedchamber beneath you.
Ancient Door
Accessing the Baldur’s Gate 3 Overgrown Ruins through the Ancient Door is easily one of the most challenging ways to get in. Beginning from where you first met Shadowheart after crash landing on the beach, head down the path to the door next to the waypoint. This door will be tough to lockpick, and few people make it through. However, if you can get in, this door will lead directly into the Dank Crypt.
Overgrown Ruins Bedchamber in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Bedchamber is the first area of the Overgrown Ruins you will access, either from the Chapel Entrance or the Ornate Door. As soon as you get inside, you will enter into a fight with five different enemies, and Andorn, of course. These enemies will be simple to defeat, but watch out for doorways, as they can significantly hinder your movement. Once you’ve taken them out and looted the area, it’s time to make your way to the Dank Crypt and find the Withers NPC.
Overgrown Ruins Locked Door With No Handle
As you head farther South into the Overgrown Ruins, you will encounter a locked door. However, your character will notice no lock or handle and wonder how to open it. Head farther South into the Ruins until you come across a room with a giant statue.
Rather than interacting with the statue at any point, we will head behind it to investigate the wall. As you walk past the wall, your party will passively roll Perception Checks. If any party member succeeds with the roll, you will notice a lever shaped like a skull that you can interact with. When you interact with it, the previously locked door will open, allowing you access to the Dank Crypt to find Withers.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Dank Crypt in Overgrown Ruins
Exploring the Dank Crypt will provide loads of loot in different forms. In the first room of the Crypt alone, you will find a couple of chests.
Sarcophagus Room
After you head through the Heavy Oak Door on the South Side of the room, you’ll find loads of traps, so make sure you have a party member who can pass Perception Checks easily. After passing through or disarming all the traps, you can loot the several sarcophaguses in the room. Here, you will pick up The Watcher Guide, a two-handed spear that gives you Advantage on your next attack on the same target whenever you miss.
Statue of Jergal Room
Head back to the North through the other Heavy Oak Doors to enter the Statue of Jergal Room. When you arrive, you’ll notice that Entombed Scribes litter the room. On the West side of the room, you can find a room filled with more sarcophaguses, along with the Book of Dead Gods. To read the book, once you’ve unlocked it with a lockpick, you’ll need to pass a Religion Check.
Hidden Room
Just to the Left of the Statue of Jergal, in the Northeast corner of the Statue Room, look around until you pass a Perception Check on a button. Pressing the button will bring all the Entombed Scribes to life and begin a battle. Taking down the Scribes should be relatively easy, and none have high health.
Once the Entombed Scribes are taken down, and the fight concludes, head back to the button and press it again. This time, a hidden door will open, allowing you into a small hidden room behind the statue.
Head inside the room and search the Heavy Chest for the Amulet of Lost Voices, then interact with the room’s centerpiece, the Richly Adorned Sarcophagus. Interacting with the Sarcophagus will summon Withers, a strange skeleton that speaks to you without aggression. Speak with him to get him to enter your camp, where Withers will sell Hirelings and resurrect fallen members of your party.
