You may never know what becomes popular on streaming services. HBO has a king rather than a queen as Black Adam becomes the newest number-one movie on Max, dethroning Barbie. Despite a lack of popularity when it came to the service, the Dwayne Johnson-led superhero flick seems to have found an audience.
Released in October 2022, Black Adam bombed at the box office with $393 million worldwide before going to Max in December of that year. It was slowly climbing the charts recently as viewership surprisingly picked up in the last few days. Today, it inches out on top as the Margot Robbie-led film sees a dip after conquering 2023.
Black Adam Beached Off Barbie on Max
Flix Patrol has shown that Black Adam is the current number-one movie on Max. After the doll-based film from Greta Gerwig, it goes down to Ready Player One, Blue Beetle, Elvis, He’s Just Not That Into You, Angels & Demons, Don’t Worry Darling, Ted, and The Flash.
For most of his career, the wrestler-turned-actor tried to get the superhero role and a standalone movie off the ground. Due to poor reception, a disastrous box office return, and the rebooted DCU from James Gunn, it is uncertain if we will ever see him reprise the role in any capacity. Much of the plans from the new co-CEO of DC have been kept under wraps, with only an initial slate of projects from the big and small screen being detailed. It is also possible we could see the actor come back in a different role if offered and accepting of it.
On the flip side, the land of pink and feminism won 2023 in every way imaginable. Due to various circumstances, including the Barbenheimer phenomenon, the Robbie and Ryan Gosling film was the biggest hit of the last year as it grossed over $1 billion worldwide. By the time it came to streaming, it took over people’s homes. Now, it is taking the award season by storm with two Golden Globe wins, a Gotham Awards win, one Grammy, and eight Oscar nominations.
