Back in March, Venturebeat reported that the next Battlefield game would be titled Battlefield V and return to a World War II setting. Now it seems that Venturebeat has received more information regarding Battlefield V’s development.
Jeff Grubb of Venturebeat is reporting that DICE is testing a new battle royale mode for Battlefield V that will include “similar gameplay to megahits like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds”. Grubb reached out to EA for any comments on this report but they declined.
Grubb did go on to say that this proposed battle royale mode is still in the prototype phase so it is not expected to be available for Battlefield V when it launches in late 2018.
This news is coming only hours after the report that Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII is ditching their signature campaign structure in favor of the introduction of a battle royale mode. We likely are not going to have any confirmation of the existence of Battlefield V or a battle royale mode for the franchise until E3 2018.
That being said, it looks like AAA title games are finally noticing the immense popularity of battle royale games and are hoping to jump in on the highly successful genre as soon as they can. Let’s just hope that EA doesn’t turn this rumored Battlefield into another controversy like Star Wars: Battlefront 2.
EA may be getting into the battle royale market but the big question is what do you think? Do you like the idea of all of these AAA titles getting battle royale modes? Or are you tired of the genre altogether?
