After a highly-successful first outing into the Arrowverse, CW has officially confirmed a pilot order for Batwoman.
As expected, Ruby Rose will return as Batwoman. Emmy nominated David Nutter will direct the pilot. Nutter is best known for his directorial prowess on the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones. His work includes amazing episodes such as “The Rains of Castamere”, “Mhysa”, and “Mother’s Mercy”. He will also be involved with a few episodes of Game of Thrones season eight (which will act as the series’ final season).
David Nutter is familiar with the CW network and the Arrowverse as well. Along with Game of Thrones, he worked on pilots for both Arrow and The Flash as director. Both of these episodes are highly rated and served as great launch points for their respective multi-season runs. Hopefully, Batwoman will have the same fate.
Here is an official synopsis for Batwoman (courtesy of Entertainment Weekly):
“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (star Ruby Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries) will act as the show’s showrunner. Greg Berlanti will serve as an executive producer on the project.
Although some may think this means we could see the Batwoman pilot as soon as Fall 2019, I would have to disagree. The important thing to remember here is the upcoming major Arrowverse crossover, “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. Kate Kane’s involvement is all but a guarantee but it would be a smart move from The CW to keep the pilot off-air until after this monumental event.
