Contrary to popular belief, swords aren’t the most effective weapons for melee combat. No, that award goes to the spear. Nothing beats a good ol’ sharp stick and thankfully, Elden Ring honors this archaic superweapon that mankind invented longer before it became civilized. So in the spirit of appreciating spears, look at how far (and how absurd) they have come in From Software’s open-world action-RPG. These are the best Elden Ring spears, the ones you’ll want to take to the Shadow of the Erdtree.
10. Siluria’s Tree
Upgrade Type | Unique (can’t be infused) |
Max Damage | Physical – 220 Holy – 220 |
Max Scaling | Strength – B Dexterity – D Faith – C |
It’s the perfect weapon for cosplaying a Crucible Knight, at least the less menacing ones that carry a spear. Its weapon skill, Siluria’s Woe, is a ranged spiral attack that comes in handy in PvE and can catch opponents off-guard in PvP. Damage-wise, it’s decent, but the lack of customizability can limit your build options.
9. Treespear
Upgrade Type | Unique (can’t be infused) |
Max Damage | Physical – 298 Holy – 193 |
Max Scaling | Strength – D Dexterity – C Faith – D |
The Treespear is in a bit of an odd spot due to the C in Dexterity scaling which you can’t change since it’s a unique weapon. Dex/Faith hybrids have more options than that, especially in the katana segment. However, the weapon skill makes up for this spear’s shortcomings.
Specifically, it grants a 60-second Golden Order damage boost, and you can even swap to other weapons after buffing. Besides, the damage of the spear itself is commendable despite the rather low scaling.
8. Vyke’s War Spear
Upgrade Type | Unique (can’t be infused) |
Max Damage | Physical – 252 Fire – 161 Madness – 65 |
Max Scaling | Strength – D Dexterity – B Faith – C |
Vyke’s War Spear, or the “Vyke Pike” is one of the most fun weapons you never knew you wanted, especially in PvP. The whole innate Madness mechanic and shenanigans will make any PvP opponent panic. Outside of that aspect of Elden Ring, the weapon skill Frenzyflame Thrust is flashy and reliable for both bosses and enemies.
7. Pike
Upgrade Type | Regular (can be infused) |
Max Default Damage | Physical – 281 |
Max Default Scaling | Strength – C Dexterity – D |
If you’re to leverage the spear’s main advantage, which is its range, then the Pike is the safest skewer you can wield. It has the longest range out of all the Elden Ring spears or any melee weapon, for that matter. The damage can be somewhat uninspiring, but you can compensate for that with its customizability and range.
6. Moghwyn’s Sacred Spear
Upgrade Type | Unique (can’t be infused) |
Max Damage | Physical – 235 Fire – 151 Hemorrhage – 55 |
Max Scaling | Strength – C Dexterity – D Arcane – C |
While Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear also has the drawback of being a non-infusible unique weapon, limiting you to certain builds, you’re probably not going to want to switch to other builds if you commit to this.
The weapon skill deals absurd amount of Bleed damage (it can go upwards of 10,000) and is sometimes enough to halve certain bosses’ HP. It’s great as an area nuke for Bleed and dedicated Arcane builds.
5. Cleanrot Spear
Upgrade Type | Unique (can’t be infused) |
Max Damage | Physical – 249 Holy – 161 |
Max Scaling | Strength – C Dexterity – C Faith – D |
The Cleanrot Spear has surprisingly low stat requirements for a powerful Paladin or Strength/Faith melee build. As is the case with most unique weapons, the Cleanrot Spear’s strength lies in its weapon skill, which is a delayed area Holy attack of multiple spears. This can make light work of those pesky giant crabs and other large enemies.
4. Partisan
Upgrade Type | Regular (can be infused) |
Max Default Damage | Physical – 301 |
Max Default Scaling | Strength – C Dexterity – D |
The Partisan isn’t as generous with its range as the Pike, but it’s more versatile since the moveset consists of a stab and a wide, sweeping attack. That makes this spear ideal for just about any encounter. It works well from tight corridors to open areas. That and the higher damage potential can make it more appealing if you want an all-around melee weapon.
3. Clayman’s Harpoon
Upgrade Type | Regular (can be infused) |
Max Default Damage | Physical – 242 Magic – 156 |
Max Default Scaling | Strength – C Dexterity – E Intelligence – D |
Optimally, you’d want the Clayman’s Harpoon to have a Magic affinity and infusion so you can turn that Intelligence scaling into B. That goes without saying, it’s a battlemage’s ideal weapon.
Infuse it with the Glintstone Pebble Ash of War and you can even stun-lock some enemies if you have enough FP. It’s such a powerful weapon for something so easy to obtain, and the default moveset isn’t bad for melee combat either.
2. Bolt of Gransax
Upgrade Type | Unique (can’t be infused) |
Max Damage | Physical – 240 Lightning – 154 |
Max Scaling | Strength – D Dexterity – C |
There’s no other way to go but to commit to a Dexterity build with this one, but don’t worry, it’s worth it. The Bolt of Gransax’s weapon skill, Ancient Lightning Spear, is Elden Ring‘s version of a .50-caliber anti-tank projectile.
While it’s easy enough to dodge in PvP, it’s quite a lifesaver in PvE boss fights and for sniping tough and troublesome enemies.
1. Cross-Naginata
Upgrade Type | Regular (can be infused) |
Max Default Damage | Physical – 298 Hemorrhage – 50 |
Max Default Scaling | Strength – D Dexterity – B |
The Cross-Naginata offers similar versatility as the Partisan, but with the added appeal of catering to Bleed builds, which is popular among beginners and attack-spammers. Think of this as the longer-ranged version of the Nagakiba katana, complete with a trusty thrust move.
Even if you don’t care much for the Bleed, you can still utilize it as infusing the weapon with any other affinity still lets it keep the Hemorrhage status. Lots of options with this one.
