Building a Sniper in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader isn’t easy as good sniper rifles are hard to find. But with the right skill investment, you can comfortably eliminate enemies from afar with only melee tanks protecting you. A Sniper isn’t an actual class but a playstyle, requiring you to spend time properly developing them before they become devastating. Here’s what you need to create the best Sniper builds in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader.
Best Sniper Build Archetype in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader
The best Sniper builds start with the Operative archetype. Operatives are great for setting up a target and then firing at them with accurate attacks. Expose Weakness and Precise Attacks make your enemies more vulnerable, setting them up for a powerful critical. Operatives aren’t built for the frontline, allowing them to invest in their Ballistic Skill for better ranged weapon accuracy.
Here are the skills you should invest in as an Operative for a Sniper build:
Level | First Skill | Second Skill |
2 | Tech-Use | N/A |
3 | Expose Weakness | N/A |
4 | Dismantling Attack | Sharpshooter |
5 | Perception | Swift Movements |
6 | Ballistics Calculation | Perception |
7 | Precise Attack | Tech-Use |
8 | Fresh Target | Nimble |
9 | Dismantling Attack Upgrade | Awareness |
10 | Awareness | Ballistic Skill |
11 | Insightful Precision | Logic |
12 | Perfect Spot | Laser Weapon Expert |
13 | Comprehensive Analysis | Ballistic Skill |
14 | Intelligence | Swift Sight |
15 | Dismantling Attack Upgrade | N/A |
These skills help build your movement to get into the perfect position while enhancing cover. Laser weapons are the most accurate and are great for snipers shooting through enemy cover. Talents such as Insightful Precision help make Precise Attack more dangerous to a target, letting you hurt them easily.
You won’t get many good weapons for sniping, which is why Laser Weapon Expert is left towards the end. By the time Act 1 finishes up, you find the Longlas laser rifle which is great for sniping enemies from a distance. You also have the skills to soften up a target and enough melee tanks to distract enemies. Dismantling Attack can be modified depending on your companion makeup and preferred assault style.
Next Archetype Selection: Bounty Hunter
The Bounty Hunter is the natural extension of the Sniper build as it focuses on taking down single targets. Hunt Down the Prey gives you better debuffs on enemies and you can continue to develop your Ballistic Skill. Even if you fail to finish off your target, the debuffs left on an enemy are enough for others to finish the job.
Here are some skills suitable for a Bounty Hunter:
Level | First Skill | Second Skill |
17 | Piercing Shot | N/A |
18 | Heightened Concentration | N/A |
19 | Wild Hunt | N/A |
20 | Ballistic Skill (AP Increase) | Perception |
21 | Ballistic Skill | Hunting Surge |
22 | Cull the Bold | N/A |
23 | Pierce the Armour | Awareness |
24 | Ballistic Skill | Bloody Mess |
25 | Gruesome Kill | N/A |
26 | Demolition | Agility |
27 | Wild Hunt Upgrade | N/A |
28 | Prescient Sight | N/A |
29 | Awareness | Ballistic Skill |
30 | It Will Not Die | Claim The Bounty |
31 | Guidance | N/A |
32 | Perception | Awareness |
33 | Expert Finesse | N/A |
34 | Penetrating Sight | N/A |
35 | Wild Hunt Upgrade | N/A |
Here’s a quick recap of the build path:
- Always choose Operative because it’s better for eliminating single targets like a sniper.
- Don’t worry about getting good sniper rifles until you start picking up powerful laser weapons.
- Develop your skills further as the Bounty Hunter Archetype.
