Bethesda Game Studios has been a household game developer since their success with The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind in 2002. Since then, they have put out sequels or expansions for The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series every year. Before the Release of Fallout Shelter in June 2015, Bethesda has exclusively released their titles to Windows, Xbox and Playstation consoles. Fallout Shelter was released as their first mobile title to iOS and Android devices and has seen huge success in downloads and user reviews. With virtually everyone and their mother carrying around an Android or iOS device, this was an opportunity for Bethesda to expand their audience beyond current fans of their console titles. Expanding and new customer success is exactly what they achieved. For the months of June and July in 2015, Fallout Shelter was the No. 1 game on the App store in 48 countries. Of course, with the name Fallout included in the title, success was bound to follow. However, director Todd Howard was quoted exclaiming that the studio never expected their first mobile release to achieve what it has. At the 2016 DICE Summit, Todd Howard had this to say about more mobile games…
“We’re gonna do more.” – Todd Howard
With the popularity surrounding their current mobile title, we can expect to more games to be released in the future. However, Todd Howard is aware that they are not the only contenders in developing engaging mobile games. Games like Hearthstone, Crossy Road and Clash of Clans dominate the mobile gaming world, creating an incentive for Bethesda to develop the best games they can. This is a tall order, but we can expect great future content on mobile devices from Bethesda. Official announcements have not been made on future titles currently development. It’s a tall order to fill while currently working on three expansions for Fallout 4, but Bethesda is up to the challenge.
