According to Deadline, a Bewitched reboot is in the works at ABC by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris.
Barris will write and executive produce the reboot series along with Black-ish writer Yamara Taylor. ABC has apparently given a pilot production commitment to the new take on the classic sitcom.
Here is a quick plot synopsis from the Deadline article:
“In Bewitched, written by Barris and Taylor, Samantha, a hardworking black single mom who happens to be a witch, marries Darren, a white mortal who happens to be a bit of a slacker. They struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.”
Deadline also stated that Barris sold Bewitched to ABC just before his departure from the network August 15th. A day after leaving ABC (due to creative differences), the Black-ish creator officially signed a three-year deal with Netflix with an option to add another two years. This deal, if his Netflix series succeeds and he stays for all five years, could potentially net Barris $100 million.
Getting back to Bewitched. Over the years, countless networks from CBS to NBC have fiddled with the idea of reviving the 1960s beloved sitcom. The last time we saw this title in a mainstream setting was with a theatrical take on Bewitched in 2005. This movie starred Nicole Kidman as the main lead with Will Ferrell as her co-star. It’s safe to say that this remake did not end well as it currently stands with a 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
