Billie Eilish lost a staggering 100,000 Instagram followers after sharing a girl-on-girl photo to her feed back in 2020. The singer, 22, sent shockwaves across the platform after revealing her lock-screen photo, one seemingly controversial enough to have her own followers walk away.
At the time of the drama, Billie boasted 73 million Instagram followers. Per JOE, the Grammy winner’s fanbase dropped by 100,000 in only a matter of hours, with one fan spotting that the 73 million figure had fallen to 72.9 million. The reason? A simple doodle that showed the upper body of a female anatomy, one described by JOE as being “two women.” Eilish, who clapped back, has more than recovered from the downturn in following and is now kept tabs on by 119 million.
Billie Eilish Unfollowed On Instagram Amid Doodle Drawing
Billie’s photo didn’t come out of the blue. The Hit Me Hard and Soft hitmaker had answered a prompt, one challenging her to “Post a Picture Of: a drawing you’re really proud of.”
Replying: “Probably these,” Billie shared a drawing of the female anatomy, with some snakes thrown into the mix. Despite the image being a celebration of the human body, it appeared to have offended fans, who swiftly unfollowed her. In her caption, Billie had said, jokingly, that she adores the female chest. The singer did not remain silent amid both the unfollowing and the tirade of hateful comments pouring in.
Claps Back After Getting Unfollowed
Using a screenshot to accompany her response, Billie accused her followers of being childish as she said: “LMFAOOO y’all babies smh.”
This wouldn’t be the first time Billie had faced online backlash. 2020 also brought a headline-making bathing suit video as the pop sensation showered outdoors during her Hawaii travels, something that landed her critique. Opening up after the video, taken when she was 18 years old, Billie expressed her exhaustion at never being able to get it right. If she covers up, she’s told to strip down. If she shows some skin, she’s slammed for it.
In an interview following the drama, Billie stated:
“It was trending. I saw comments like, ‘How dare she talk about not wanting to be sexualized and wear this?!’ There were comments like, ‘I don’t like her anymore because as soon as she turns 18 she’s a w***e.’ Like, dude. I can’t win.”
Billie made headlines again this year for her Fourth of July bathing suit, rocking a hot pink two-piece as she celebrated Independence Day with fireworks. The “bad guy” singer is followed by celebrities including singer Selena Gomez, model Hailey Bieber, and actress Salma Hayek.
