‘Billionaire Handlers, You Say?’: Talarico’s Televised Debate Challenge to Paxton Ignites Hypocrisy Claims in Texas

Pot, meet kettle?

Texas State Representative James Talarico posted a video on X challenging Attorney General Ken Paxton to three televised debates. In the post, Talarico stated that Paxton’s billionaire handlers have kept him from answering questions in public for over a decade and invited him to prove that claim wrong. The message, made in the context of the Texas Senate race, has drawn strong online reactions, with many users highlighting Talarico’s own funding from billionaire Reid Hoffman.

Ken Paxton’s billionaire handlers won’t let him answer questions in public. It’s why he hasn’t debated in over a decade.

But I want him to prove me wrong.

In the clip, Talarico appears on MSNBC’s Morning Joe and speaks directly to the camera from a studio. He states, “Ken Paxton’s billionaire handlers won’t let him answer questions in public. It’s why he hasn’t debated in over a decade. But I want him to prove me wrong. I’m challenging Ken Paxton to three televised debates.”

He goes on to pose several pointed questions: “Why did you give an Epstein-style sweetheart deal to an admitted Child predator adam Hoffman? How did you become a multimillionaire on a government salary? Did Tim Dunn and Ferris Wilkes, your top two billionaire mega donors, buy an acquittal in your impeachment trial?”

The post text repeats the identical challenge. The footage includes interspersed images of Paxton but does not show his response or the full preceding context of the interview. Both men are the major-party nominees in the race to succeed retiring Sen. John Cornyn.

Debate Demand Meets Immediate Pushback

Several users focused on the billionaire funding theme raised in the post. One commenter wrote, “Billionaire handlers, you say?”  Another stated, “Dude just got 10m from Reid Hoffman.”

A third added, “You have billionaire handlers too. You’ve never accomplished anything, yet you are installed as the next big thing in politics. Newest demon liar puppet.”

Other replies defended Paxton or dismissed the challenge. One commenter said, “Debates are not necessary when two people disagree on everything. Talarico is a lunatic while Paxton is a smart guy who will stand up to evil people like YOU.”

Other replies offered different perspectives. One suggested, “You need just to start showing up at events he’s at and challenging him to a ‘duel’ aka impromptu debate.”

Another addressed one of the questions in the clip, writing, “Talarico isn’t the one that let his friend Adam Hoffman walk after he raped a little boy.” The commenter is responding by turning the accusation back on the accuser. They are essentially saying “Talarico is in no position to criticize Paxton on this issue because of his own alleged connection to an Adam Hoffman involved in a child rape case who supposedly received lenient treatment.”

The clip has become part of the broader exchanges in the Texas U.S. Senate race. For now, it adds one more moment to the ongoing public debate between the two nominees over debates, donor influence, and campaign accountability.
