Billy Ray Cyrus has officially broken his silence regarding his performance at Donald Trump‘s inauguration ceremony. After causing controversy by agreeing to do the concert despite the politician’s questionable history with his daughter Miley Cyrus, the singer took to Instagram to share his excitement over his latest gig. Since he has only appeared to double down on his support for Trump, fans are calling him a “sellout” for siding with the president-elect over his own family.
Billy Ray Cyrus Is “Ready to Rock” With Donald Trump
On Sunday, Jan. 19, Billy Ray Cyrus posted a behind-the-scenes photo from Donald Trump’s inauguration event. The picture shows the country music star holding a guitar while sitting in a chair in front of a large crowd of Trump supporters, many of whom are wearing red MAGA hats. “Sound check ✅ went GREATTT! This house is ready to rock with @realdonaldtrump!” Billy Ray wrote, alongside an emoji of an American flag.
His post has received a mixed response from fans. While fellow Trump supporters applauded Billy Ray for backing the politician, others were disappointed. Critics called the musician out for performing at the event despite what previously went down between Donald Trump and Miley Cyrus.
What Happened Between Donald Trump and Miley Cyrus?
Over the years, the “Malibu” singer has been very vocal about her political views. Apart from endorsing democratic candidates like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, Miley has repeatedly expressed her dislike for Trump. She’s even gone so far as to call him a “f*cking nightmare” and a “hateful a**hole.”
Her remarks haven’t gone unnoticed by the president-elect. After dissing him time and time again, Trump responded to Miley by mocking her during one of his campaign rallies last year. Since Billy Ray was in the audience, Trump took the opportunity to call out the musician and his daughter’s opposing political views. “How did you get such a liberal daughter? How had that happened, Billy Ray?” Trump said at the event.
With this in mind, fans don’t understand why Billy Ray would support Trump. After seeing his latest post at the inauguration event, some labeled Billy Ray a “sellout” and the “worst father ever.” Meanwhile, others called him “pathetic.”
He isn’t the only singer in hot water over joining the inauguration lineup. Earlier this month, Carrie Underwood also received backlash after news broke she would be performing at Trump’s inauguration ceremony. Since she had previously stayed out of politics, people were surprised she agreed to perform knowing it would alienate some of her long-time fans.
She’ll take the stage in Washington, D.C. during Trump’s swearing-in ceremony on Monday, Jan. 20.
