A black woman in Georgia became teary-eyed over the fact that her state’s newly elected governor is named Keisha.
Keisha Lance Bottoms is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who served as mayor of Atlanta, Georgia, from 2018 to 2022. She also worked as a senior adviser to former President Joe Biden. Following her victory in Georgia’s 2026 gubernatorial election, Bottoms made history as the first black woman elected governor in the United States.
The woman, named Imani, shared a video on TikTok in which she slowly said, “My governor’s name is Keisha.” She became teary-eyed as she spoke before laughing with happiness, still holding back tears.
Imani continued, saying, “Where I come from they tell you, you can’t do anything with a name like Keisha. And here, my governor’s name is Keisha.” Tears then began rolling down her face as she said, “Oh, wow.” She ended the emotional video by saying, “Good morning, everybody.”
Imani’s emotional reaction appeared to reflect the racism and discrimination that black Americans have faced because of their names. Names commonly associated with black communities, such as Keisha, have sometimes been subjected to negative stereotypes, particularly in professional settings, where individuals may encounter discrimination during hiring processes.
Her comments highlighted how some black Americans grow up hearing that their names could limit their opportunities or prevent them from achieving success. Seeing a woman named Keisha become governor of Georgia was therefore particularly meaningful to Imani, as it challenged the stereotypes and expectations often associated with such names.
