Call of Duty‘s marketing momentum for Black Ops 6 is revving up, and it seems like Zombies fans are enjoying the most of it. While everyone thought that Terminus Island was at the center of attention in Black Ops 6 Zombies, Treyarch has revealed a cinematic trailer for the Liberty Falls map, featuring Edward Richtofen’s return. In fact, it’s all presented to the sweet melody of “We’ll Meet Again” by Vera Lynn, which ended Black Ops Cold War Zombies with. The trailer has a lot to discuss, with subtle details that point towards MW3 Zombies’ Ava Janses, the mysterious Sam, and a Black Ops 2 Origins map reference?! Take my money, Treyarch!
Who Is Sam?
So the Black Ops 6 Liberty Falls cinematic trailer starts with a flashback showing Richtofen’s wife and child’s death that has traumatized the man. This definitely has something to do with Liberty Falls’ outbreak, and who is behind this you may ask? Samantha Maxis! Yes, the Sam referred to in this trailer is in fact Samantha Maxis who went into the Dark Aether in the Forsaken map and never returned after sealing the portal shut inside a sphere.
In the Black Ops Cold War Zombies ending, we saw Richtofen’s message, as the entity is sealed in the Dark Aether. Clearly, Maxis won’t be a problem for Project Janus. Now, while we don’t know exactly what Project Janus really is, it seems like Sam is back from the Dark Aether, and he’s trying to stop Edward Richtofen from doing it.
Same Room In Liberty Falls
Did you realize that Edward Richtofen is sleeping and operating in the same room that Dr. Ava Janses was seen in in the MW3 Zombies final cutscene? Perhaps the mirror behind the door helps you recognize the place better. Mind-blowing! The Black Ops 6 Liberty Falls cinematic trailer is a love letter to all Zombies fans in the community.
Most importantly, there’s one more MW3 and Black Ops 6 Zombies connection here: In the MWZ final cutscene, Ava Jansen is investigating Project Janus and looking at the blueprint for the iconic Wunderwaffe DG-2 wonder weapon. If you recall, Richtofen had that weapon as his home security gun in the Liberty Falls trailer.
There’s also a theory that the hand reaching out to Ava Jansen from the Dark Aether is in fact Richtofen. Looking at the white sleeve and the shape of the hand, it could be Edward trying to escape the Dark Aether.
A Sweet Return To The Origins, Black Ops 2
One last super huge detail about the Black Ops 6 Liberty Falls cinematic trailer is that the old Samantha Maxis theme song is played at the end of the video! Now this is the next level of story connection here, as we had heard this song nearly 11 years ago in the Black Ops 2 Origins map where child Sam and Eddie — the same Samantha Maxis and Edward Richtofen here — were playing together.
This trailer is a big bad hype machine that should get fans pumped. Pleasing to the eye, Liberty Falls’ story is one of the best we’ve ever had in the Call of Duty Zombies narrative. And what’s more is the fact we don’t need to wait too much longer to watch CoD Next where prominent Call of Duty streamers play and stream the Liberty Falls map for the first time. Specifically, the event will air on August 28, 2024, Very exciting!
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be available to play on October 25, 2024.
