A Black woman in Cleveland who regularly posts food review content on TikTok is questioning whether she was subjected to racial bias during a recent visit to a popular eatery located on the city’s West Side on Lorain Avenue. According to her, after she went to the Heart of Gold restaurant and placed her order, her meal was served on a compartmentalized tray, which she said felt more appropriate for an institutional setting than a sit-down restaurant.
“I was thrown the [expletive] off,” she said, adding that she checked to see whether anyone else in the restaurant was served the same way but could not find anyone. Besides her issue with the plating, she also noticed that her egg was not cooked the way she had requested.
The Restaurant Claimed They Were Being ‘Nostalgic’
After taking some time to contemplate whether she should even speak up about her concerns, the woman decided to do so and waved a waitress over to her table. She first asked whether the tray was the normal way meals were served, and the waitress told her that it was, describing the style as “nostalgic.”
That explanation did not sit well with the customer, and she told the waitress that the tray felt “almost jail-like” and that the plating itself was throwing off her entire experience. She then asked for a separate plate and requested a smaller plate specifically for the toast. Before the waitress took the food away to be corrected, she also mentioned that her eggs and bacon needed to be cooked longer.
While waiting for her food to be brought back, the woman decided to look up the restaurant online to see how meals were typically served. According to her, what she found only deepened her discomfort. She came across a photo showing what appeared to be the same items she had ordered, presented together on one large plate rather than on a tray.
To make matters worse, despite her clear instructions about how she wanted her food presented, the waitress returned with the meal divided across four separate plates. The woman said this made her feel as though she was being played with rather than accommodated.
At that point, she decided not to eat the food at all and instead asked to pay and speak with a manager.
It Escalated Further
During the conversation with the female manager, the woman explained that this was her first visit and that she had chosen the restaurant partly because of its visual appeal and atmosphere. She told the staff that the way her meal was presented did not match what she had seen online and felt off-putting rather than nostalgic. She also pointed out that she had looked around the restaurant and noticed other diners with similar items who were not being served in the same way.
The manager responded by saying that every “slam” served at the restaurant is plated that way and assured her that the presentation was standard. However, the discussion became tense when the manager allegedly shrugged and smirked as the customer continued voicing her concerns.
The woman accused the manager of being defensive and passive aggressive. “It’s kind of like you’re being funny now,” she said. Although the manager apologized and thanked her for the feedback, the woman said it did not feel genuine. She walked away to return to her table, filmed the plates, and then left the restaurant.
In her video, the woman also told her followers that she had tried not to overreact but could not shake the discomfort. “I feel like they’re playing with my top here,” she said.
How Netizens Are Reacting to the Cleveland Woman’s Experience
Netizens were heavily divided in the comments. Some said they immediately understood her discomfort, with one person writing, “When you know, YOU KNOW. It’s all in the condescending tone and passive-aggressive responses. I’m sorry you had to battle that alone.” Another agreed, saying, “Definitely racism. They didn’t even attempt to have customer service at all either. The plating was definitely horrendous.” A third added, “That’s a child’s plate from Walmart. I know this because I have them for my kids.”
However, several viewers pushed back on the claim of discrimination. One commenter wrote, “Heart of Gold is amazing, the people are great, and the serving tray is normal. Have some fun, they aren’t racist.” Someone who identified themselves as a white Cleveland resident also said, “I’ve been there once or twice and I was served my food on a cafeteria tray both times. I can’t speak to the service you received, but they have had those plates for a long time.”
