Right when we thought that Warzone had hit a new low with its 2025-2026 content, Blackout, the very first Call of Duty BR experience from Black Ops 4, is announced to make an epic comeback! This is the golden opportunity for Warzone to step up the gameplay while also making a lot of fans waiting for a sequel to the original Blackout super happy.
The news comes straight out of Activision’s annual event, where they showcase the gameplay of their new Call of Duty game. Everything, including Multiplayer, Zombies, Campaign, and, of course, Warzone, is announced with deeper information. Now, while it seemed like the spotlight was solely on Black Ops 7, a new wave of nostalgia kicked in with the announcement of Blackout for Call of Duty: Warzone right at the final moments of COD NEXT.
Set in the brand new Warzone map, Avalon, Blackout is appointed to become a new game mode for Warzone to sit alongside the Resurgence and Battle Royale in the Spring of 2026. However, the timing is bittersweet, as there’s nothing new in the game, but rather a combination of reskinned Zombies maps, called Haven’s Hollow, for the months to come. Nevertheless, the news is indeed bold and much needed for Warzone.
Why Is Blackout Necessary For The Future of Warzone?

When Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 didn’t come with a story-driven Campaign, it introduced a new option as its third mode: Blackout. The all-new Call of Duty Battle Royale experience, where players start the game with nothing, having to loot up every item from guns to flashbangs, and survive. This mode is significantly different from Warzone due to its chaotic nature and gameplay elements, such as the utilization of Wingsuits, which is precisely what’s needed for Warzone.
Over the past couple of years, Call of Duty: Warzone has undergone minimal changes in terms of overall gameplay. Minor tweaks, such as movement speed adjustments, flying loot, and the removal of Tac Sprint, have been released and announced, but the core gameplay remains unchanged from five years ago. Armor, Gulag, loadouts, that’s it. This can be frustrating when there’s nothing new to experience.
Now, with the addition of Blackout, it’s assumed that the armor system changes. Players won’t have access to the parachute, weapon rarity will be removed, and, well, there will be no Gulag. This is fresh air. But still, this is a blast from the past, something that definitely needs new features other than the ones from Black Ops 4 to last longer than a season, and we’ll only have to wait and see how it turns out for Warzone.
