The gamescom dev awards 2026 have officially crowned their winners, recognizing everything from promising indie games to individuals making a difference across the video game industry. Six awards were presented during a live ceremony in Cologne, Germany, on August 24, with Blue Prince and industry advocate Amir Satvat both receiving the Speakers’ Choice award

Four awards focused more on projects appearing at this year’s gamescom dev indie expo, while another two were selected by the event’s speaker community. The ceremony also concluded with a special tribute to gamescom dev founder and former Game Events Managing Director Stephan Reichart.

Hosted by Markus Wilding, the awards ceremony celebrated indie developers across categories covering innovation, visuals, future potential, and sound design. The Speakers’ Choice categories were decided ahead of the ceremony, with speakers from years prior invited to vote.

Visual Excellence Award – MUTTER

MUTTER is a haunting stop-motion game set in World War II England, following Maddox Holloway. His mother is slowly being turned into a monster, and his father is away fighting; Maddox must explore, solve puzzles, gather resources, and even craft to uncover the truth behind his family’s curse.

It makes sense why it would win the Visual Excellence Award, with stop-motion visuals that really make it look as though you’re playing through a Laika movie. It’s a refreshing look at just how important the presentation of a game is as its story or gameplay.

Most Innovative Game Award – PRAVDA(concept25)

PRAVDA(concept25) is actually pretty fitting in today’s day and age. It is about journalism and the manipulation of truth under a totalitarian regime, where you play as Saga, a Resistance member who runs around the streets of Abil-Gudit collecting any information that could expose the Party.

At its core, PRAVDA(concept25) turns journalism into a gameplay mechanic, asking players to consider not only what information they uncover, but how they choose to present it. Just about every editorial decision can influence the fate of the city, the Resistance, and Saga.

Most Promising Game Award – Cards & Cannons

This roguelite deckbuilder lets you construct a realm and then turn it into wild death traps for incoming enemy hordes. Instead of just placing down towers along predetermined routes, players control the battlefield itself. You can control where enemies spawn so you can create choke points, position your defenses, and use spells.

The structure in Cards & Cannons really encourages experimentation across tons of runs, with different worlds introducing new enemies, bosses, and challenges while permanent upgrades let you progress even further.

Best Sound Design Award – Invasia

In Invasia, sound plays one of the most important parts of its approach to horror, using audio to make the world around you feel threatening and oppressive. Distant sirens, heavy footsteps, environmental noises, and the sounds of unseen creatures help reinforce the feeling that something could be waiting beyond every dark corridor.

Instead of relying only on visual scares, the sound design contributes to the game’s psychological tension and sense of isolation.

Game Design Excellence Award / Speakers’ Choice – Blue Prince

One of my personal favorites, Blue Prince follows the heir of a mansion, whose owner asks you to explore the home’s various rooms, uncover secrets, and get to the mysterious Room 46. To get to each room, you must fill a floor plan and choose which rooms to place down, with each having several entrances and exits that can be used to unlock new and differing rooms.

While doing this, you’ll also uncover the secrets of others who lived in the mansion, unraveling an even more mysterious and awesome story that redefines puzzle adventure games.

Ambassador Award / Speakers’ Choice – Amir Satvat

Amir Satvat took home the Ambassador Award for his contributions to those who have been searching for jobs, connections, and more within the gaming industry in light of the recent layoffs and company restructures. Through ASGC, he has built a free support network that expands beyond just providing career resources to people across the gaming industry.
