It seems that the rumors were true. Borderlands 3 will be hitting shelves September 13th, 2019. Gearbox confirmed this via Twitter:

Borderlands 3 looks to bring back everything gamers loved about the Borderlands franchise. This includes the over-the-top fun characters to fill out the unique world (or in this case worlds), a distinct art style that sets itself apart from other games in its genre, chaotic 4-player co-op (online or split-screen), and a billion guns.
Like previous Borderlands games, you’ll be able to pick from 4 different characters with their own skill-trees and playstyles. With Borderlands 3, you’ll select from Moze (The Gunner), Amara (The Siren), FL4K (The Beastmaster), and Zane (The Operative). Here’s a quick description for the game courtesy of Gearbox:
“The original shooter-looter returns, packing bazillions of guns and an all-new mayhem-fueled adventure. Blast your way through new worlds and enemies as one of four brand new Vault Hunters, each with deep skill trees, abilities, and customization. Play solo or join with friends to take on insane enemies, collect loads of loot and save your home from the most ruthless cult leaders in the galaxy.”
Unfortunately, the quick September 13th release date comes with a catch for PC players. The game will be a timed Epic Games Store exclusive for the PC platform. So Steam gamers who don’t want to purchase the game via Epic will have to wait until April 2020.
Borderlands 3 is set to get an official gameplay reveal event May 1st.
