Speaking with CBR, Superman writer Joshua Williamson reveals that the villain Brainiac will play a large role in the publisher’s Dawn of DC Event. Not only will the Superman villain cause trouble for the Man of Steel, but he will send ramifications throughout the entire DC Universe.
Brainiac and the Dawn of DC
This year, CBR is hosting an exclusive interview series with the creative team behind the upcoming Superman series. Kicking things off is writer Joshua Williamson who revealed that Brainiac is playing a major role in DC’s newest publishing event, Dawn of DC. Specifically, in discussing the first issue of Superman, Williamson stated that the ending “teases not only what’s coming for Superman but Dawn of DC this year”. He went on to add that “It’s not about Brainiac here, Brainiac is a much bigger player in the DCU and Dawn of DC”.
As the name suggests, Brainiac is an intelligent villain within the DC Universe. This high-level intellect allows him to possess others, absorb information, manipulating computer systems, and even travelling through space and time. While Brainiac has caused mayhem across DC, he is primarily a thorn in Superman’s side. Now, he is primed to make some noise all across the Universe.
Superman 2023
This new Superman series comes from Williamson as well as artist Jamal Campbell. The Dawn of DC series finds Lex Luthor behind bars while Clark Kent settles back into life in Metropolis. Of course, peace never lasts as new enemies emerge from the shadows to put an end to Superman. However, this time Superman has some help in the form of Supercorp, a secret project given to the Man of Steel by Lex Luthor.
Speaking more about the series, Williamson shares that it also shows some big changes for Clark Kent’s better half, Lois Lane. As Superman is in a new position as a leader of Supercorp, Lois Lane is now the Editor-in-Chief at The Daily Planet. However, she doesn’t feel she is quite up to the challenge, but as Williamson says, “she realizes that there is nobody else that can do it but her.” Though, will she be able to sit behind a desk while all the action happens outside?
Superman #1 is out today.
