Brave Dog Protects Missouri Woman from Convicted Felon in Creepy River Encounter: ‘She Meant Business’

Dogs always know.

A riverside afternoon nearly turned into a nightmare for one Missouri woman until her dog stepped in.

In a now-viral TikTok posted by user @itjusttasha, a woman bathing at a quiet riverbank in Mount Pleasant, Missouri, captured the chilling moment a suspicious man approached her from the woods. The video, which begins with peaceful scenery, quickly escalates when a man who had previously been seen floating downriver on a tube suddenly emerges from the trees, sneaking toward the woman’s spot.

In a follow-up video, Tasha explains that the man had been tubing with a friend but suddenly left the water, swimming to shore and creeping along the riverbank. He ducked behind trees and approached silently until he appeared near her tube on the sand. At that moment, she stood up and asked him directly, “What are you doing?”

Before the man could answer, her German Shepherd, Bella, stepped up.

With her hackles raised and stance rigid, Bella began barking sharply, placing herself between the man and her owner. Tasha called Bella back, but the dog didn’t flinch. She didn’t lunge, but she didn’t give ground either. The man froze, visibly shaken, and seemed to glance downstream where, according to Tasha, another individual may have been waiting. His subtle hand signal suggested there was more to the situation than met the eye.

TikTok viewers quickly picked up on the danger.

“Girl, he had an agenda,” one user commented. Another wrote, “She scared him enough for him to back down. If you didn’t have her, this could’ve gone very differently.”

As more information came out, it was confirmed that the man was Jeremy Lee Gotwalt, a known criminal with a record that includes drug charges, prison time, and at least one conviction for sexual assault. One Reddit user summed it up: “Nothing says ‘I’ve done time’ like that guy’s tattoos.”

Despite widespread calls to alert law enforcement, Tasha made it clear in her second video that she has no intention of contacting police. Her goal, she said, was not revenge but awareness. She wanted to show how important it is to be able to protect yourself, and how invaluable dogs can be in unpredictable situations.

TikTok was flooded with praise for Bella. “She meant business,” one commenter wrote. “She deserves all the treats.” Another said, “That dog read the situation perfectly and acted faster than any human could.”

Experienced dog owners chimed in with respect, noting Bella’s body language and restraint. “She was alert, responsive to her owner, and didn’t attack blindly. That’s a well-balanced guardian,” one user observed.

Tasha’s calmness also drew praise. Many viewers commended her for staying composed, using a firm voice, and managing her dog while keeping control of the situation.

Whether Gotwalt had a specific plan or was just testing boundaries, Bella’s presence changed the outcome. One user put it plainly: “Dogs always know.”

In this case, Bella knew enough to stop a threat before it could become something far worse.
