During Nintendo’s E3 presentation of the long-concealed Zelda game, Link ran all across the plateau, battling enemies and exploring shrines. Mechanics such as cooking, handling equipment, and the Sheikah Slate were demonstrated, but the game’s plot was carefully left out of the spotlight. But now, a gameplay video of Breath of the Wild has surfaced of the playable demo in which a certain evildoer is revealed, along with a hint as to the game’s place in the Zelda timeline (which fans everywhere refuse to stop arguing over even after its official publication). For those interested, skip to 9:00 in the video for the story reveal, but be careful as it may contain very minor spoilers.

From the footage, it can probably be assumed that the voice Link hears will be a recurring companion during major scenes. No other evidence of voice acting in Breath of the Wild was present, despite the mysterious old man’s many lines throughout. In theory, this was the only plot-related segment of the game not shown during the presentations. The rest of the plateau exploration, including the shrines, hang glider, and places from which to jump off the plateau were all shown by the Treehouse staff.

With story being a major reason many people play video games, one has to wonder what Breath of the Wild has to offer beyond Link saving Hyrule from evil. As an open-world game, it’s conceivable that players may get to experience the story out of order, or that they will instead be given bits of history to piece together that will serve in place of a main plot. With all said and done, the Sheikah tribe is certainly an integral detail, and those that conform to the official timeline will note that a game set in the Era of Decline is long overdue.

The one thing all fans can agree on: 2017 can’t come soon enough.
