Bungie Remembers Drifter’s Favorite Mode Exists and Promises an Eventual Return After Iron Banner and Gambit’s Temporary ‘Hiatus’

A long-forgotten mode

Another week, another Destiny 2 TWID, and this time, we have some news about one long-forgotten game mode that we certainly didn’t think would appear on The Edge of Fate, and I’m talking about Gambit. At this point, changes in Bounties aren’t big news. After all, this happens with every expansion, so we all expected it. However, Bungie actually mentioned Gambit and even talked about its plans for Iron Banner. While many PvE players are already excited about all the things coming to Kepler, PvP Guardians can start rejoicing, too.

Assuming you didn’t read this week’s TWID, it focused on several aspects—first, the Rite of the Nine rewards. The new rotation is coming, and there will be new weekly rewards that you can pursue. Furthermore, Bungie has already talked about the Bounty changes coming to the next expansion, but since those aren’t the focus of this article, we’ll include the link to the TWID here. Now, let’s move on to the important matter: Gambit in Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate. And before you go wild with “CTRL+F” to search for “Gambit,” I promise, it is real. The developers mentioned it, and we couldn’t be more excited. However, it might be a bit of a bittersweet mention, at least for now.

The TWID begins talking about Iron Banner and how this, and the long-forgotten Gambit mode, will go on hiatus. However, hiatus doesn’t mean abandonment, so you can start huffing that copium now. For the former, Saladin will take a much-deserved rest and return sometime in September. Yet, there are activities that will fill that banner-shaped hole, such as Heavy Metal and new Trials of Osiris weapons and armor.

On the other hand, Gambit is also going on hiatus, which is weird because it never felt like it was that relevant in the game (at least lately), but hey, Gambit mentioned! In all seriousness, this game mode will remain in the Worlds tab, and you can play it to obtain legacy rewards. However, Bungie teased that Gambit would return in the future with rewards and mechanics we “haven’t seen since the days of Prime.”

The Return of Gambit is a Big Deal

Let me summon some of the old knowledge from the game’s lexicon (I know that is from Star Wars, but we’re getting an expansion based on that, so bear with me). Gambit returning in Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate is one of the most surprising announcements ahead of the expansion’s release because, in the eyes of every Guardian, it is a game mode that had all the potential to blow up but didn’t. Furthermore, it left Drifter drifting away (no pun intended) without becoming a narrative centerpiece.

If Bungie follows through with its promise, we could really get a Season of the Drifter 2: Electric Boogaloo, and I would love that. Yet, we’ll have to wait until the hiatus ends, which, contrary to Iron Banner, doesn’t have a date. Still, it is nice to see that one of the game modes that many players have enjoyed is finally getting some love. And judging by all the changes coming to The Edge of Fate and how it is revamping and making most content way more approachable, the Gambit revival could be one for the history books.
