A family in California is facing backlash after a woman on TikTok alleged that they refused to pay immigrant workers who were hired to set up decorations for a gender reveal event.
The woman alleged that she was at a park for a birthday party when she noticed a nearby gender reveal event taking place. She claimed that the family hosting the gender reveal refused to pay the workers who had been hired to set up the decorations for the event.
According to the woman, the family said they did not like the decoration setup for the gender reveal and described it as “ugly,” which she claimed was the reason they refused to pay the workers. She also alleged that one of the workers experienced an anxiety attack during the situation and that his blood pressure dropped. “That is so [expletive] up,” she said in response to what she witnessed.
The woman further alleged that, despite claiming dissatisfaction with the decorations, the family still proceeded to take photos at the gender reveal event. She also said that the workers felt unable to involve law enforcement because they did not have legal documentation. The claims led many viewers online to describe the situation as upsetting and unfair, and it sparked wider discussion about worker protections and labor disputes.
She later shared a video showing the gender reveal decorations, which she believed were well done. The clip was presented as supporting evidence for her claim that the family still used the setup and proceeded with the event despite allegedly expressing dissatisfaction earlier.
Viewers Upset After California Family Refused to Pay Immigrant Workers
The video sparked reactions online. A lot of viewers expressed anger and sympathy over the situation described in California, with many saying they felt the workers were treated unfairly. “So sad! They were probably counting on that money for groceries or rent,” one person wrote. Another offered to help financially, saying, “Who are the couple? I’m willing to pay them for their effort.” Others were more critical of the family’s actions, with one commenter writing, “That decor was not ugly. They just didn’t want to pay.”
Others argued that the workers should have been paid regardless of their immigration status. “Canceling or withholding payment for work already performed simply because a worker lacks legal documentation is generally not allowed and can be considered illegal wage theft, regardless of the worker’s immigration status,” one person wrote. Some even alleged that the family ended up paying the workers after the video went viral.
The video was controversial for many viewers, who felt the workers should have been paid for their labor even if the decorations did not meet the family’s expectations.
