How factual is the information we’ve been fed by the media regarding ICE arrests? Sometimes, it’s difficult to differentiate between what’s true and what isn’t. A California podcaster recently brought up some great points regarding ICE. She questioned whether or not we’re seeing true numbers related to the arrests of actual criminals in the U.S. The Trump Administration claims that they’re out here arresting criminals accused of some of the most heinous crimes. But is that actually fact?
A TikTok video shared by @iampoliticsgirl shows a conversation between a California podcaster (Leigh McGowan) and conservative talk show host Ben Ferguson. Ben asks, “True or false: Did we allow millions of people unvetted into this country, many of them who are criminals?” News anchor Abby Phillip then comes in with, “Immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than native born Americans. That’s a fact.”
At this point, podcaster Leigh McGowan adds, “It’s not political to say that we don’t want murderers in our country. We want those people identified and we want those people punished.” But Ben doesn’t let her get another word in edgewise and asks, “Then why are you not working with ICE to get rid of them?” He continuously interrupts her until Leigh is able to speak again, where she takes a moment to call out Trump. She says, “We all want that, okay? And if Donald Trump wants to get on TV and say, our problem is, we haven’t highlighted our accomplishments enough, I would say great, highlight your accomplishments. Prove it. Prove you are getting the worst of the worst.”
Ben tries to interrupt Leigh again, to which she demands, “Zip it!” She then proceeds with, “Prove you’re not rounding up line cooks and roofers and abuelas and healthcare workers, and you’re giving them actual due process and cause. Prove you are saving innocent lives and not just taking them on the street. Prove you have any sort of system.” She also makes a very fair point as she adds, “Prove that you have citizenship, that you’re checking, that you’re making sure you’re not taking citizens.” I’m sure we’ve all seen the videos and heard the horror stories about actual U.S. citizens being detained and removed from their households. Of U.S. citizens finding themselves being held in detention centers until they can prove themselves.
It turns out Ben wasn’t able to show proof, and he stutters, trying to speak over her. Leigh makes some fantastic points, but he has nothing to back up his own. As one commenter pointed out, “So frustrating that he won’t even TRY to listen to her. Smh.” Imagine having somebody hit you with articulate facts, and all you can do is speak over them. It’s anger-inducing to watch.
