A California resort worker says she ruined a family’s “entire vacation” by giving them a bit of health advice. While watching over guests at the Lake Tahoe resort, she noticed a family with a toddler in a hot tub. She decided to point out the dangers. But the family wasn’t happy about the confrontation and made it known.
Olivia (@oliviamaiauthor) is a children’s story author who also works at a California resort. She recently added CDC information to the pool area warning that children younger than 5 should not use hot tubs. The CDC specifically advises that children under 5 stay out of hot tubs because of the health and safety risks associated with their use.
Olivia says an entire family came in to use the resort’s pool and hot tub area. They had their 2-year-old toddler with them, who they permitted to use the hot tub with them. She said the toddler was having a lot of fun and was even putting his head under the water, which Olivia noted was “extremely not safe.” She decided to say something to the family, telling them the hot tub is 104 degrees and “not safe for children under the age of five.”
When Olivia told the family this, she said they “immediately got so mad.” The family said they were going to leave and asked their child if he wanted to go to the arcade. Olivia said she was surprised by the family’s reaction, believing they could have simply removed the toddler from the hot tub while the other family members continued swimming. On top of that, she mentioned the child was still in a “swim diaper.” She said this opened an entire other box of worms. As she said, that’s a problem because a child is “peeing and pooping particles in the hot tub at all times.” While swim diapers can help contain solid stool, they are not leakproof and do not prevent all germs or bodily waste from entering recreational water.
Olivia was surprised by the family’s actions, since only one parent needed to leave with the child. But they all left the area because they were irritated by the conversation. Olivia heard the parents complaining about the conversation, saying they weren’t concerned about the hot water in the tub. She heard one parent say, “I don’t really think it’s that big of a deal.” She also heard one of them say, “Guess we’re just not swimming for the whole vacation.” The family was very upset by the encounter. Olivia adds, “Sorry I informed you about the CDC safety for your child.”
The video immediately sparked reactions from commenters, many of whom agreed with Olivia. One commenter asked, “Why are kids in the hot tub, ever?” Another commenter added, “Diapers in a hot tub is a health hazard. The tub would need to be shut down and cleaned.” One commenter stated, “It’s YOUR hot tub, you don’t have to tell them the dangers. Simply tell them children under 13 are not allowed at your establishment. A hot tub is for relaxing, for soothing your muscles. It’s NOT FOR CHILDREN. Period.” Commenters continue to share their reactions to her video, with many sharing Olivia’s sentiment about child safety involving hot tubs.
