California Woman Claims Landlord Controls Thermostat, Leaving Cats in Sweltering Heat: ‘I’m not gonna last three months’

That’s ridiculous

A California woman documented various issues she’s been having with her new place, and this is right after she just signed on a three-month lease. The biggest issue stems from her landlord supposedly having total control over the temperature in her room.

TikTok user Artsy_allie, aka Allie, posted about the friction going on in her life on her personal TikTok account. She had learned the shocking discovery — after signing a lease — that she wouldn’t be permitted to adjust her own thermostat. Allie had been instructed to keep the thermostat at 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

On its own, that’s not too bad, but Allie is also dealing with the California heat. Even worse, she has cats. The creepy part is that although she has AC, she claims the landlord came into her room and turned that off too, in turn leaving her cats “in a sweltering apartment of nearly 90 degrees.”

To top it all off, she says in her TikTok video she’s spent thousands of dollars just to move from Colorado to California. Living with her parents is less than ideal, as they’re dealing with a mold problem that made Allie and her cats sick.

Viewers offer their sympathy and possible solutions

Many of Allie’s viewers offered their deepest sympathies and support. Landlords aren’t exactly seen favorably in the U.S., so clearly no one likes the idea of another person having that kind of control over their living space, even if it’s just a room. Other than sympathy, commenters did try to offer possible solutions.

“I would sue for unlivable conditions,” one commenter suggested. “Put a heater under the thermostat,” another commenter chimed in with, effectively hiding the real temperature of the room.

Others spoke of California’s consumer protections, stating they were some of the best in the U.S. On that note, a viewer said to “contact the housing department/government” and said what Allie’s landlord is doing is illegal.

While Allie has not released a follow-up video on her plans, she has stated in the comment section of her video that she’s likely going to just find another place. “I want to know that my kitties are comfortable when I’m not home,” she wrote.
