He was self-regulating

A mother in San Francisco, California, took her family, including her autistic child, to lunch. During their meal, the child began stimming, which prompted a woman to approach their table and to confront the mother about the noise.

TikToker Badpinay shared the tense moment on TikTok. While her content on the platform is limited to food, she does have a bigger following on Instagram, where she often shares photos of her life in the Bay Area. The clip attached above garnered one million views, 57,600 likes, and more than 4,600 comments.

The California woman began recording as soon as the lady approached their table. She told Badpinay that she was hearing-impaired and was wearing hearing aids. All she could hear, she said, was the child yelling. She also pointed at him.

The child was stimming, rather than making a fuss, which would also be in character with young children. According to the Lighthouse Autism Center, stimming, or self-stimulatory behavior, is repetitive actions or movements meant for self-regulation. These can be visual, vestibular, tactile, auditory, and vocal.

Back-And-Forth

Knowing this, the mother chose to defend her child.

“He has autism,” Badpinay said. “So, if you don’t want to cooperate in public, then you should do a takeout order. I have to deal with you and her.”

The lady, unfazed, told the mother that she had worked with her friend’s son. The friend was sitting just next to her, and the son, according to her, was also autistic. With a smirk, the friend told Badpinay that she could distract the child and “manage his behavior.”

The California mother took offense at the suggestion and the confrontation. She told the women they were going to go viral for messing with an autistic kid and that they should do takeout if they were unable to deal with children such as her son.

“You don’t think it’s hard for us? You think I want to deal with this [expletive]? I don’t want to deal with this [expletive] either, but I have to,” Badpinay added.

Reactions

The video divided viewers into two opposing sides. The first thought the lady was out of line and defended Badpinay and her child. One said, “People are so heartless. They should both be ashamed of themselves.” Another one commented, “Kids deserve to be in public just as much as adults.”

Other viewers agreed with the lady. One wrote, “Autism isn’t an excuse for bad behaviour.” Another one added, “Having a child with autism doesn’t make you entitled.”

Badpinay then shared that her son was doing better the following day, saying that he was no longer vocal stimming.
