Internet users expressed outrage after a video circulated showing an autistic girl in Connecticut being prevented by school staff from dancing during a school performance.
The girl’s mother shared a video from the performance showing her daughter standing in a corner and dancing on her own, while the other children were allowed to stand in the center and dance together. The mother also said her daughter had been excited for the event and had practiced for the performance beforehand.
As the video continued, a woman with green hair approached the girl and appeared to gesture for her to move further away. The girl then remained in the corner, continuing to dance separately from her classmates. The mother later zoomed out the footage, showing the rest of the students gathered together on stage, dancing in a group while her daughter remained apart.
At one point, another woman appeared with a student and led her toward the rest of the group. However, the girl was still shown remaining on her own. She then moved closer to the group and briefly danced alongside them, smiling and looking toward her mother. After a few seconds, a school staff member approached and pulled her away from the performance area. The video ended at that point, and the mother later provided additional context.
On top of the video, the mother said that what happened to her autistic daughter amounted to discrimination. She also accused the school of excluding her daughter and keeping her restricted to a corner. “Then adults stepped in and prevented you from joining your peers. The confusion, frustration, and heartbreak on your face said everything,” she wrote.
The mother also described how deeply the situation affected her, saying, “When I looked back at the video I literally cried. It’s not fair at all. She’s an innocent child,” she said. She also suggested that legal action may follow, adding, “Plenty. Unlike the adults who stood by and allowed it to happen, I didn’t ignore it. This is much bigger than a social media post. The video speaks for itself, and so will the investigations and those reviewing the evidence. This is one of many… I got my lawyer ready,” she said.
Viewers Outraged After Autistic Connecticut Girl Is Excluded
The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers expressed outrage on behalf of the autistic Connecticut girl and the situation at the school performance. “Im so sorry, this is NOT acceptable. The way I would’ve called everyone responsible to a meeting,” one person wrote. Another person said, “I’m so confused, she knew the dance…”
More viewers expressed sympathy for the girl. One woman wrote, “As a mother to and autistic little girl… They wouldn’t have even been able to finish the routine before I’m acting a plum fool behind my baby. This is a prime example of saying we are our child’s voices‼‼” Another person said, “She was not only excluded to the side the other woman that came up pulled her away from the group when she was just joining in and doing so well I really hope something is done about this because there was no reason for them to exclude her.”
The video prompted discussion online about how schools accommodate autistic students and whether additional support or inclusion practices may be needed. It also led to broader conversations about how parents of children with special needs advocate for their children when they feel they are being treated unfairly.
