Can You Play Sea of Thieves Solo? Explained

A lone pirate is a rich pirate.

Technically speaking,ย Sea of Thievesย is strictly a co-op PvEvP experience; after all, what’s a pirate without a crew, right? Well, they’re rich, as you can playย Sea of Thievesย solo rather than multiplayer, and this way, you can plunder and loot on your own. How else can you prove that you’re the mightiest in all the seas than by taking on the treacherous waters solo? But this type of life comes with ups and downs. Before you decide to venture out on your own, perhaps it’s time to consider whether the game isย worthย playing that way.

Solo Play in Sea of Thieves

It’s established that you can play Sea of Thieves solo. But should you? Well, if you have no interest in cooperative play or you simply want to test your mettle, then why not? Single-player can be just as rewarding as multiplayer in Sea of Thieves. However, you should realize that it can also be more complicated. With the right strategy, though, you can have fun regardless.

Learn Solo Play in Safer Seas

Safer Seas is a way for you to enjoy Sea of Thieves on a private server rather than in multiplayer mode. You still face enemies, but they aren’t player enemies. It’s the perfect way for you to learn the game if you’re a beginner, whether you’re a newcomer or it’s your first time in solo mode.

Do note that you won’t earn the same in Safer Seas as you would in High Seas. You’ll get Gold and Reputation points at a lower rate since there’s less risk. Some features are unavailable, too, like Athena’s Fortune, since it’s directed toward PvP play. Still, Safer Seas is the perfect testing ground to understand the game better or if you just simply want to have fun on your own. That said, let’s go over some tips and tricks to playing solo in the normal mode: High Seas.

Choose The Right Ship

One of the most important aspects if you want a successful solo run in Sea of Thieves is to play with the right ship. You get the choice of three ships in the game:

  • The Sloop
  • The Brigantine
  • The Galleon

The Sloop is the smallest, and it fits one or two pirates. For solo play, choose the Sloop. Brigantine fits up to three crew members, while Galleon handles up to four. The bigger the ship, the more you have to handle. For instance, the anchor on the Sloop is manageable by just one person. Meanwhile, the anchor on the Galleon is heavy and takes more strength and manpower to manipulate.

You don’t want anything slowing you down on a solo play in Sea of Thieves, and the Sloop is ideal for moving fast. This is especially ideal if any combat overwhelms you.

Pay Attention To Voyages

Not all Voyages are your friends in Sea of Thieves. For instance, a Ghost Ship Voyage requires you to destroy numerous Ghost Ships, Flagships, and a Ghost Captain Ship. As you’re just one person, it can be an uphill battle. Probably not impossible, but difficult. There are plenty of other Voyages that will get you through just fine, like Treasure Map Voyages, Merchant Contracts, and Cargo Runs.

Know When To Fight and When To Hide

If you’re overflowing with confidence, then feel free to tackle solo play however you’d like in Sea of Thieves. We do recommend you approach fights cautiously. You can certainly handle battles on your own, but keep an eye on when things get too dicey out on the dangerous seas. There are plenty of places you can hide out for the enemy to pass you by if you don’t feel ready.

How To Handle PvP in Solo Sea of Thieves

Even if you hop into the game solo, there’s a chance you’ll encounter other players. If you do, be sure you’re prepared. Loot as much as you can to gain much-needed resources. And learn how to work your ship. Practice landing shots on the many rocks and other areas of the sea.

And keep an eye out on approaching ships. If it’s a Sloop or Brigantine, you have a solid chance of winning. Galleon runs the risk of a bigger crew, so try not to face off against those ships. Know that some other players may be friendly, but in most cases, they just want to steal or kill you. Always be prepared.
