Couch multiplayers rejoice! One of the best in recent memory, Castle Crashers, is receiving a current-gen makeover and is coming out next week. Castle Crashers‘ developer, The Behemoth, released the details for the upcoming next-gen update on their blog. The full details can be viewed here in the original blog post.
Wednesday, September 9th has been announced as the release date on XBox One, with a PC version announced but with no details as of yet (still nothing on whether PS4 will be getting the remastered cut). Some of the improvements to Castle Crashers Remastered are:
- Improved framerate, from 30 fps to 60 fps
- Online improvements
- A new multiplayer minigame called Back Off Barbarian
- Larger texture size
- Small tweaks to gameplay and performance
Castle Crashers Remastered will normally retail for $14.99, but here is where the most exciting part of The Behemoth’s announcement comes in. If you owned the original Castle Crashers for XBox 360 and currently have an XBox Gold membership, you can download Castle Crashers Remastered for free (as long as you download it between September 9th and September 20th). After September 20th, you will be able to pick the game up for only $5 if you have the original XBox 360 version. The original version will also have backwards compatibility when that feature releases for XBox One this fall.
The original Castle Crashers is a side-scrolling, four-player beat ’em up. It has an excellent art style and a great difficulty curve, and was a standout indie title when it was released in 2008 for XBox 360 and again when it was released on Playstation 3 in 2010. It won numerous “Best of” awards and the remastered release for XBox One should be no exception. Check out the announcement trailer for Castle Crashers Remastered below:
