Facepunch Studios has a track record of releasing regular content updates to Rust every month, which is becoming somewhat of a rarity in the industry. Facepunch is a company that attaches great importance to the opinions of its players and what they think about the changes it makes. We can easily see this in what Facepunch is planning to add to the game in the Rust January 2024 update. Let’s take a look at what’s expected to come to Rust in 2024.
Rust Upcoming Changes in 2024
Facepunch has added many new features over the past year to Rust, including the Missile Silo, Ferry Terminal, Attack Helicopter, M4 Shotgun, Drones, and Industrial System. Facepunch is committed to bringing more updates like these to the game and will release the Backpack update on February 1. There were only minor hotfixes in the Rust January 2024 update, but there will be more substantial changes in the future.
Backpacks
Backpacks have been long requested and eagerly awaited by players. Especially Solo/Duo players have been having trouble transporting loot and not being able to get most of the items, which this addition should hopefully relieve.
New Clan System
In recent months, Facepunch also announced that it would be adding a new Clan System to the game. This system will be a welcome change for players like me who like to play in small groups. As far as I understand from the commit of Facepunch Developer named Lamalove, in the new Clan System that will be added to the game, Clans will gain or lose points from certain events.
Here is the description of the commit:
Implement a bunch of clan score events
Killing a player from another clan
Killing a unarmed players (lose score)
Being killed by a player in another clan (lose score)
Destroying Bradley
Destroying a TC owned by another clan
Hacking a crate
Running the Excavator
Boarding the Cargo Ship

This means that clans will be encouraged to fight with other clans instead of dealing with fresh spawns. This will make for a much better experience for new players just getting started. After a while, this change may even lead to larger clans being nice to players in smaller groups and helping them by giving them items.
Map Improvements
Especially after the Rust HDPR updates, many players, including myself, complained about the new cliff and rock formations. This is because the rocks are now absurdly steep and often impossible to climb. You may need to go around a cliff for minutes to find a way to scale it. However, Facepunch says it will fix this in the 2024 updates. It says it will add canyons and better caves, as well as improve the lakes and rivers and fix the cliffs. It also announced that it will add a new biome.
All of this will add wonders to Rust‘s beautiful map and make the game more enjoyable. Apart from that, adding these to the game will all for many more unique base locations. The current Rust map has a very harsh terrain and it is a challenge to find a decent place to build.
For example, in the current state of Rust, it is very difficult to find a good base location unless you log into a server immediately after Wipe. However, when these map changes are introduced, we will be able to find good locations by the water or in mountainous areas to build a base much more often.

How To Fish in RustNight Time Improvements
Walking around at night in Rust, especially doing PvP, is a complete nightmare if you are not playing on a modded server due to the near-pitch darkness hindering your vision. Many players take advantage of the game by using third-party applications that increase screen brightness or gamma.
Fortunately, Facepunch Developers are aware of this situation and have announced that it will be addressing this issue early in the year. Of course, we expect that will still need items like a Flashlight or Night Vision to be able to see and fight our enemies at night in a fully effective way. After all, nighttime is a great time to craft and carry loot that can hide you, so you don’t want it to be too bright.
