Almost a month after the incident occurred, Chris Rock’s mother responded to Will Smith slapping her son at the 2022 Oscars. Rose Rock, motivational speaker and youth advocate, spoke to WIS and addressed her son being slapped after making a joke regarding Jada Pinkett-Smith’s hair loss. Rose Rock said, “You reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye and you went and made her day because she was mulled over laughing when it happened.” She went on to say that “when he slapped Chris, he slapped me.” Rose Rock watched the ceremony at home and thought the slap had been staged until Smith started shouting profane words at her son.
Chris Rock’s Mom Not the Only One Upset at Will Smith
Chris Rock’s mom wasn’t the only one shocked and enraged at Will Smith slapping her son. Smith received significant backlash for his behavior, which led to him resigning from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. It also led to him receiving a 10-year ban from any Academy events, including but not limited to the Oscars ceremony. Many believe that Smith should also have his Oscar for Best Actor, which he won the same night, revoked. However, many have reacted by saying that sexual offenders such as Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, and Harvey Weinstein still have their Oscars, and Smith should not lose his.
Despite the controversy, Smith’s career appears to remain thriving. While some projects have been canceled or paused, MovieWeb reports that Smith is being “flooded with work offers.” However, time will tell how many moviegoers will be interested in seeing more of Smith on screen.
Rose Rock Not Impressed With Apology
Rose Rock went on to say that she was grieved by a perceived lack of apology from Smith to Chris Rock. “I feel really bad that he never apologized. I mean his people wrote up a piece saying I apologize to Chris Rock, but you see something like that is personal, you reach out.”
