Christian Group Slammed After Suing Michigan Town for Discrimination: ‘When You’re a Spoiled Brat, Fair Treatment Feels Like Discrimination’

Was it really discrimination?

An international Christian group called Youth for Christ and a property owner have recently sued Leland Township, Michigan, for religious discrimination. The episode happened after the township denied a permit for a Christian youth center in a business area. Youth for Christ’s decision to go to the courts irritated Michigan residents, who sided with the local government in saying that the group is reacting unfairly.

As reported by Bridge Michigan, the controversy began after the local planning commission voted against creating the Youth for Christ ministry because of local zoning regulations. The decision concerned a building bought for $1.2 million in February 2025, located in an area that bans any kind of club in the region unless it serves food and beverages in a seated setting.

Because of the disagreement, the Christian group struck back, accusing the township of violating the First Amendment and its religious freedom. The township maintains that the decision was not based on the group’s Christianity, but on local zoning rules, however.

Michigan Reacts to Lawsuit Against Leland Township

Michigan residents were enraged with Youth for Christ while discussing the lawsuit on r/Michigan. Someone said: “These people are perpetual victims, and it’s not discrimination. Christians demanding special accommodations, being denied, then saying it’s religious discrimination is all they do because they are professional victims.”

Some folks were seemingly angry that the group decided on the most contentious way to move forward: “What gets me is they could have opened a Christian bookstore, and it would have fit the zoning. They were denied a permit because it was a club that did not fit the zoning definition.”

Others added: “It’s always the most privileged people who scream discrimination when they don’t get their way.” Most people shared this view on the thread: “When you’re a spoiled brat, fair treatment feels like discrimination.”

Another Michigander summarized the discussion, highlighting the reason why so many people opposed the lawsuit in the thread: “I’m sick of reading about this feigned victimhood. No, the church cannot build a non-commercial venue in a commercial zone. Yes, the church has to follow zoning laws. No, it is not discrimination to ask the church to follow zoning laws.”

The lawsuit will move forward for now, and it’s unclear whether Youth for Christ will get its permit.
