For some directors, there is no genre barrier. Christopher Nolan has expressed interest in making a horror movie. The filmmaker has gone into historical biopics, superhero movies, spy thrillers, and more to show he is unafraid to jump into something he has never done before.
Currently, we don’t know what the director has in mind for his next film. As he is known for his high-concept blockbusters, we await what innovative idea he has to deliver for a jaw-dropping theatrical experience.
Christopher Nolan Could Direct a Horror Movie
Speaking at London’s British Film Institute (via Variety), Christopher Nolan was asked if he would make a horror movie. He talked about how he finds the genre “very interesting” due to the dependence on “cinematic devices.” To him, it is “about a visceral response to things.” He wants to dip his toes into the underworld of everything spooky and nightmarish but says the genre “requires a really exceptional idea,” which “are few and far between.”
Studios are known for being skittish on bold ideas that can delve into darker undertones and artistic decisions that go into abstract areas. Horror, as pointed out by the filmmaker, tends to follow that line. He spoke about how horror has “a lot of the qualities that Hollywood is generally very resistant to putting in films.” Yet, the genre has become an exception as studios invest heavily in horror.
