Civilization VI was one of our favorite games of last year, and one of the best initial releases we’ve ever seen from a game in the Civilization series. However, many savvy veterans of the 4X series will tell you that each game is not fully realized until a few expansions have been released.

Step one of that process is on the way, with the upcoming Civilization VI: Rise and Fall expansion.

Rise and Fall promises many dramatic changes to the way a game of Civilization VI can be played. Some of the promised features include:

  • Golden and Dark Ages
  • A loyalty system that can cause cities to defect to other empires
  • A way to add bonuses to cities through electing talented Governors
  • Better alliance systems
  • World-altering emergency situations
  • “Historical moments” that chronicle the story of your civilization

Of course, new civilizations and leaders are also a huge draw of any expansion, and Civilization VI: Rise and Fall is no different. Enter the Dutch, with Queen Wilhelmina leading the way. Here’s her intro video:

Civilization VI: Rise and Fall – First Look: Netherlands

Wilhelmina ruled the Netherlands for almost 60 years, and through both World Wars. Her unique ability is entitled “Radio Oranje,” after her inspiring radio speeches throughout World War II. This ability grants Wilhelmina’s people a culture bonus from trade routes.

The Netherlands has a unique ship unit called the “De Zeven Provincien,” which can sink ships and bombard cities. Its unique improvement, the polder, pays homage to the world famous dikes of the Netherlands. Finally, their civilization’s unique ability is the “grote rivieren,” which grants many of their districts a bonus if built near a river. If you want to read her full write-up, the official press release is here.

Civilization VI: Rise and Fall will bring nine new leaders to the game, each with their own mechanics to accompany the overall updates to the game. It will release on February 8, 2018. Stay tuned to The Nerd Stash for more details.
