Xbox Game Studios is reportedly working on publishing a title which would be cloud-native MMO by Mainframe Studios, which will be designed to play on a variety of platforms in the gaming space, including PC, consoles, and even mobile devices.
The upcoming game is stated to be the debut title from the Mainframe studio, which is a Finland-based studio. This information came from confirmation on The Xbox Two podcast by Windows Central’s Jez Corden. It has also been reported that Mainframe is looking into gameplay mechanics and systems that would only work on a cloud-based game, something that lives entirely on a remote server.
In addition to this, it is reported that the cloud-native MMO by Mainframe will have gameplay features that are designed to scale in terms of complexity, perhaps in regards to the kind of device you are playing the game on at any given moment, meaning players might find it convenient to craft or resource farm on their phone before engaging in more complex tasks like raids on their console or computer.
To delve more into the studio behind this project in more detail, Mainframe was established by “veteran developers in Helsinki and Reykjavík,” according to the studio’s website. They detail the project they are working on by saying, “We’re creating a cloud-native MMO, a vibrant world with new ways to engage and connect with our friends. It is the game of a lifetime”.
In related news to this, Xbox Game Studios appointed Portal and Left 4 Dead designer Kim Swift as senior director of cloud gaming by in July of this year, which was reported to be in an effort to establish a new game for Xbox, to be created by renown creator Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind Death Stranding and the Metal Gear Solid games.
