Four years since the last installment of the anthology series, but Deadline has confirmed that a new Cloverfield movie is happening under Paramount Pictures. Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow) will direct, with Joe Barton (The Ritual) penning the script. J.J. Abrams, Hannah Minghella, and Jon Cohen will produce. Bryan Burk, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard will executive produce.
The report about a new Cloverfield movie under Paramount is unclear if it will be a direct sequel to the original or a continuation of different stories in the sandbox. As noted by Bloody Disgusting, the original idea was for this to be a sequel to the first by Reeves, but at this point, that is unclear.
Anvari got recognition for Under the Shadow, a horror film that ended up winning him a BAFTA. He also directed Wounds with Armie Hammer and Zazie Beets.
New Cloverfield movie from Paramount Pictures is in the works
Starting with the 2008 directorial debut of Reeves, the first film was a found footage monster movie. In 2016, we got the edge-of-your-seat thriller by Dan Trachtenberg (Prey), 10 Cloverfield Lane, had paved the direction for future installments to continue an anthology take with creative, new stories. In 2018 the last entry, The Cloverfield Paradox, by Julius Onah (Luce), was released.
The Reeves-helmed film was a commercial and critical hit due to its unique angle on the monster movie genre and its marketing that initially hid the sci-fi aspects. It also launched his career, which has boomed with his two Planet of the Apes films and The Batman. Trachtenberg found a new angle that was embraced by fans. Paradox was not well received by either critics or fans. The property has proven to go in any direction, so Anvari has a chance to take a stab that revives the franchise as Paramount is showing its willingness to continue Cloverfield.
