Celebrity marriages; most of them never last, do they? Sadly, this was proven once again just recently by a budding California-born singer and music artist who married the Sultan of Malaysia. The big difference in her case is that she didn’t even know they were properly married, and now that he dumped her, she’s seeking a proper legal and formal divorce.
Brittany Porter, 30, is the California-born singer in question, and she also goes by her stage name, Brook Lynn. According to Porter, she unknowingly married Sultan Muhammad V, the former King of Malaysia and current ruler of Kelantan. Initially, Porter thought they were just going through some kind of Islamic ceremony, but it turned out to be a legally binding marriage (at least in Islamic law).
“We met in January 2024 in New York through mutual friends. We had this instant chemistry and good banter,” Porter recalled. Their connection deepened quickly, with the Sultan flying her and her friends on lavish holidays across the Middle East and Asia, showering them with luxury hotels, designer gifts, and even jewelry to match Porter’s eyes.
“He flew me and my friends all around the world. He was so generous, the nicest hotels, giving my friends the best treatment, experiences and gifts. He loves hotels, he probably spent millions on them for our trips,” according to Porter, transcript courtesy of Business Standard.
Their April 2024 trip to Oman marked a turning point. “I thought we got engaged there,” Porter said. “They brought an imam (priest) out and I did the whole conversion, but he didn’t teach me much about Islam.” Months later, she discovered that the “engagement” was actually a nikah, which is a religious ceremony that constitutes marriage under Islamic law.
By then, Sultan Muhammad had stopped responding to her messages. Porter said she learned secondhand that he considered them “separated.” The revelation, compounded by a miscarriage in mid-2024, left her devastated. “I never received any kind of closure or accountability. I deserve a proper divorce, a proper apology,” says Porter.
Porter might be pulling off a Taylor Swift
Despite the hardships she suffered in her marriage to Sultan Muhammad V, it appears Porter has turned it to her advantage. Porter, who was briefly known in Malaysia as “Che Puan,” a courtesy title for royal spouses, has since returned to her music career under the stage name Brook Lynn. Her upcoming album, presumably taking inspiration from the breakup, is set for release in January 2026, a final act, perhaps, in her real-life royal heartbreak.
With that said, it appears Sultan Muhammad V has yet to apologize to her or formalize his divorce with her under legal terms. Pursuing that kind of closure, however, might prove difficult as Porter is now half a world away from her ex-husband. But despite Porter’s predicament, people online were somewhat harsh toward her and even mocked her situation.
“Without suspicion, she agreed to perform a ritual whose meaning she didn’t even understand. So clever,” criticizes a commenter on Facebook. “Even I married Monalisa unknowingly and she got FRAMED,” jokes another. It appears Sultan Muhammad V, however, has a rather questionable relationship track record where, prior to meeting Brittany Porter, he also married a Russian woman, only to divorce her later after she gave her a son.
