As if! Clueless, the 90s classic that helped introduce the world to several actors including Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, and Breckin Meyer, is yet another film that will receive the remake treatment. Alongside news of the upcoming Off Broadway debut of the Clueless musical comes news that Paramount is repurposing the film for the modern day.
The remake of Clueless is still extremely early in development, but Deadline has a few tidbits for us. Tracy Oliver will be producing the film, so we know it’s in good hands: she brought us 2017’s Girls Trip and, along with it, helped introduce the world to the national treasure known as Tiffany Haddish. The remake’s screenplay is being penned by Marquita Robinson, who writes for Netflix’s ode to professional wrestling, GLOW.
For those who are… clueless (sorry) about what the big deal is, Clueless is one of those perfect time capsules of a generation – a love letter to everything great (and terrible) about Gen X. It features Alicia Silverstone as Cher, a rich, superficial teenager living in Beverly Hills. She “adopts” an unpopular girl named Tai (Brittany Murphy) to teach her how to become popular, and everything falls apart when Tai surpasses Cher in popularity.
Being a romantic comedy and a coming of age story, of course everything works out in the end. It will be interesting to see how Paramount approaches a modern retelling of Clueless – it would be great to see Silverstone and other members of the original film’s cast reprising their roles. That may not be in the cards, however, and they may be approaching it as a completely remake rather than an update to the original.
Either way, for children of the 80s and 90s, more Clueless is always a treat. Stay tuned for more information on the remake as it becomes available.
