Genshin Impact and Coldplay might be the most unlikely pairing you’ll see, but here we are in 2025. Coldplay’s new song, “Man in the Moon” has a music video that was shot in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board and it features Genshin Impact cosplayers appearing multiple times in the video.
Fans were ecstatic at the partnership, however, with some suggesting that Coldplay could even have a commission song in one of Genshin Impact‘s OST tracks in the future. However, some of the more faithful Genshin Impact players would likely spot something amiss in the “Man in the Moon” music video:
In the video, you could see a cosplayer for the characters Yae Miko and Zhongli on a date and in the act of kissing. Oddly enough the Genshin Impact highlight in Coldplay’s new music video is how the two characters aren’t even a popular fan-fiction “ship” in the fandom.
The two characters are notably in different nations and barely interact in the game’s stories and quests. Though the whole odd couple “ship” could be more of Singapore Tourism Board’s idea than Coldplay.
What’s even funnier is how the more popular or ideal couple “ships” for either Yae Miko and Zhongli are LGBT or gay pairings. Yae Miko often gets paired in the fandom with Raiden Shogun, another woman, while Zhongli gets shipped with Childe Tartaglia, another man. So the straight pairing of the two characters is something that will likely feel out of place for Genshin Impact fans.
Granted, canon or faithfulness to the Genshin Impact story doesn’t exactly matter when it comes to “shipping.” Still, you have to admire how the music video likely knew they would kick some hornet’s nests with the odd pairing.
Is There a Future for Coldplay & Genshin Impact?
As for the other elephant in the room, you might want to curb your excitement since Coldplay didn’t exactly announce an official partnership with HoYoverse and Genshin Impact. Perhaps one of the reasons why the Singapore Tourism Board even used cosplayers is to avoid the presumably long licensing red tape.
However, the choice for Zhongli was rather poetic and maybe not coincidental. Liyue, the nation from which Zhongli hails (and is actually a deity), means “Jade or Glazed Moon” in Mandarin, which means Zhongli is a Man in the Moon, literally the title of Coldplay’s new song.
So while the collaboration is not official or even vague, who knows– if you ship hard enough, maybe Coldplay will work with HoYoverse on Genshin Impact. They knew exactly which fans they’d be attracting with the music video they created.
