Colorado ICE Facility Faces Scrutiny After Reported Tuberculosis Outbreak: ‘Why Does the Past 5 Years Feel Like the 1810s?’

At least a dozen detainees at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Colorado have reportedly contracted tuberculosis in recent weeks. The news sparked a debate about the living conditions at the Colorado detention center, which multiple residents considered to be poor.

According to The Guardian, at least 12 people have reportedly become ill, and dozens more have been placed in quarantine to prevent the disease from spreading. Reports indicate that those in quarantine have been kept in isolation without air conditioning. In addition, an unidentified detainee accused guards of failing to separate infected people from those who were healthy.

The facility, located in Aurora, is operated by the Department of Homeland Security and the GEO Group, a private company. This is not the first time concerns have been raised about conditions there. In April 2025, for example, reports indicated that an apparent tuberculosis outbreak had occurred at the facility.

Colorado Residents React to Tuberculosis Outbreak in ICE Facility

Colorado residents on Reddit’s r/Colorado were unhappy to learn that detainees at the Aurora facility were allegedly being held in such poor conditions, with many criticizing the Trump administration over the state of ICE detention centers. One user said: “When you cram people into tight spaces together with poor living conditions, you get things like tuberculosis.”

Others were concerned about the detainees’ health. One person commented: “It takes a combo of antibiotics to treat this.” Another added: “Guess who gets to pay for the meds, then the lawsuits afterwards? It’s the same people that are paying for climate change damage, and it’s never going to be the oligarchy. Privatize the profits, socialize the losses.”

The discussion also led some users to argue that society seemed to be moving backward: “Why does the past 5 years feel like the 1810s?” Other commenters tried to explain the situation, saying: “The cult desperately wants these scary brown people to be sick and miserable. Cruelty is the point.”

In general, folks were disturbed by the reported conditions at the ICE facility, though many felt powerless to do anything about them despite being angry with what’s happening right now.
