Colorado Landlord Sells Customer’s Storage Unit Items Behind Their Back: ‘They Stole It’

I don’t believe the landlord.

A storage unit is supposed to be a safe place for its owners, especially since some people actually leave valuable items in it. Well, one Colorado man wasn’t lucky enough for his stuff to remain safe. The man shared how his rented apartment comes with a storage unit in the basement, which is specifically assigned to his unit. The thing is, when he needed to get stuff from the storage unit, he found half of them missing. His Colorado landlord gave a pathetic excuse, honestly, that almost no one believed. I can know a lawsuit when I see one.

My landlord "accidentally" sold items from my storage unit – do I have legal recourse?

According to the owner, he was planning to get some camping gear that he was storing in his storage unit. To his surprise, he found half of his stuff missing. They aren’t cheap stuff either. He estimated their price to be around $800-$1000. He made sure to contact the property manager, and the Colorado landlord claimed that they were “cleaning out abandoned storage units,” and unfortunately for the man, his storage unit was included by accident. The Colorado landlord proceeded to let him know that they sold his stuff at a property sale. Things didn’t stop at that, as the Colorado landlord’s response was to offer the man $250 as compensation. What they are saying doesn’t seem plausible. If they were cleaning out units, why did they only “clean” half of the man’s items?

People Reacting to the Colorado Landlord’s Mistake

People in the comments started giving the man advice on what he should do next. Many of them claimed that the Colorado landlord was actually lying. One person said, “So… they were cleaning out ‘abandoned lockers’ but ONLY took half of your stuff and sold it? No. They stole it and sold it for cash. If they were ‘clearing it out’ they wouldn’t leave it half done. As others have stated, make an itemized list of items missing and what it costs to replace. You can also probably go through your renters insurance and they will chase your landlord.” Someone else agreed on the stealing part as they wrote, “It’s not legal. They stole your items.”

Others believed for certain that the Colorado landlord stole the man’s items for personal gain. One person wrote, “This sounds like bulls**t because only half your stuff was gone. If someone accidentally cleaned out your unit I’d expect it all to be gone. Id bet whoever they paid to clear out abandoned units also stole a bunch of stuff.” Another person said, “They stole your property, purposely.” Several also advised the man to go to the police; this is definitely good advice. It’s almost impossible that the Colorado landlord is telling the truth. If they were cleaning storage units, there wouldn’t have been anything left.
